When my Sim, who lives in a residential rental property, buys a business—in my case, a veterinary clinic—he doesn't transfer the money from the residential unit to the business. It's a bug reported two years ago that still hasn't been fixed, or at least it's happening to me right now. I'd never tried it before, only with people who lived in non-rental properties.
