I had a dog that was void black, but I managed to restore it by turning off custom paint. I don't think I'd even used any custom paint pattern on the dog, but just cancelling the custom paint mode restored my dog's normal fur texture.

yes but does not work on custom painted pets which is the main issue. Those textures are forever lost in current save files.
