Everything's on fire

Every time I've played recently, everything is randomly catching on fire. My bed caught on fire at least 2 or 3 times before I finally just replaced the bed, thinking that was the problem. I love the sims, but at this point it isn't enjoyable anymore. My sims have no money to replace everything that's burned, and now everyone is scared of fire. I saw someone saying that happened after the cursed book rental event, I had that happen a few days ago but since then my sims have sold that rental house and live in and own different ones now. I never completed the event, so that could be problem.
