Icons and UI going missing

Started a new save after the latest update. I had chosen to play the scenario 'Making Money'. The game was working normally until all of a sudden the icons and UI for several features went missing. For example if you tried to move to a different location using the 'M' key it would not let you choose another city to travel to. Furthermore, you are completely unable to interact with sims or objects whilst the sims will work as normal. This seemed to happen when I clicked out of the build and buy mode or tried to move to a different location then cancelled. Also when I save and exit to the main menu I am met with a grey screen with no way to play except from closing the game altogether. I am not using any mods or custom content.
