I did the original bug report on the old forums but after my save got corrupted after going into occupied residential rental units from manage worlds many times so I stopped doing that and therefore didn't have that issue anymore. 

I never noticed the items in the storage objects disappeared if I switched between households in the residential rental, it only happened if I went into the occupied lot from manage worlds. Perhaps that's changed now? In general I avoid residential rentals as I find they are too buggy.
