sims disappear on lot after traveling

when playing once i get onto my lot and after building if i travel to another lot or even entering cas when coming back to my lot my sims icons will appear grey and say they arent at home and there is nothing i can do to get them back on my lot even if i close the world and reopen it the icons stay grey and i cant see/do anything with my sims
