Trying to change display mode to fullscreen causes game window to disappear
FINAL UPDATE: After working with a support rep from EA over chat, the issue quite literally magically fixed itself. I had read somewhere that trying to launch the game from the GeForce Experience program could help the game forcefully kick into Fullscreen somehow. I tried that and got a slightly different result than usual and could at least see a windowed game screen display on my screen, but when I clicked it, my original issue returned. I said screw it and went to launch the game directly from the executable. First time I did that, no dice. Second time i did that, it magically worked. I made sure that my settings for the game were set by geforce experience first, I ran the game from that program, the different result occurred, I ran the executable directly from the source folder, it didn't work, tried it again because I was starting to lose my marbles, and now it works. The support rep was equally baffled but we were both extremely confused with what causes this situation as the only similar examples either of us could find all had their issues magically solved without any clear explanation.
Though I'm still experiencing really bad fps relative to my hardware, that seems to be tied to a terribly unoptimized DX12 mode that doesn't play well with resolutions beyond 1080p or 1440p. At least I can get back into fullscreen reliably now.
ORIGINAL POST BELOW
I can play in windowed mode and in borderless mode but whenever I switch to start to play in Fullscreen, my display goes black for a second as usually happens when I make games go fullscreen, and then I just get thrown back to my desktop. The game window just minimizes to my taskbar but it doesn’t crash. I can still hear the game audio and everything else so it’s still running, the window just won’t display at all.
Every time I hold my cursor over the game’s icon in my taskbar, a small window for the game is shown in the top left corner of my screen but it’s just an all black window (save for the top portion where you can see the program name, the minimize, maximize, and close buttons).
Never had this issue before and I’ve not changed anything on my system since the last time I tried to play this.
I did a full uninstall of the game, even uninstalling the shaders from AppData and deleting my settings folder in documents. After redownloading I have the same exact problem.
Can’t seem to find similar issues around the web so hopefully someone here can help.
P.S. When I do play in Borderless or maximized windowed mode, my FPS, even at low settings, is like barely hitting 60 even at the main menu. The FPS get doubly worse as I increase the overall quality As bad as to maxing at 36fps on ultra (again just on the main menu). This shouldn’t be happening.
My specs are below:
AMD Ryzen 9 3900X
GTX 2080 Ti FE
64 GB DDR4 3200mhz
Game is played on a 1TB internal SSD that is not the C Drive.
I’m playing at 4K (3840x2160), low settings preset, borderless, Res Scale is 100% and dynamic resolution is off. DX12 is on.
GeForce experience suggests I have everything set to max (including shadows set to HFTS) and my res scale should be 125. Employing those settings (save the fullscreen suggestion) makes my game run at 22fps in the main menu.
So yeah, somethings up with the game here.
P.P.S. I don’t have a second display but I do have a headless ghosts HDMI plug in to emulate a second display and when I try to fullscreen and set screen 2 as my display screen, the game doesn’t go fullscreen but it pops up in a small window in the top left corner of my screen that runs normally. It’s just a bordered window running on Screen 1 even though I set it to be fullscreen on screen 2. It’s also less than a quarter of the size of my overall screen. So something’s REALLY wrong with how this display system is working. Again I did a completely clean wipe from my computer and reinstalled it from scratch save for the cloud sync files and I’m still having this issue.
P.P.P.S. Yes all of my drivers and software are up to date. I'm using the latest Nvidia drivers (445.87), I'm running Win 10 Pro 1909 build 18363.815. Of course my game is up to date and even after I did the fresh reinstall, I verified my files JUST to be safe. Still encountering the same issue. Also I'm now noticing that trying to bring it to full screen from borderless mode eventually allows it to reset back to borderless mode but when it returns to borderless mode, the frame rate plummets to like 8 or 9 fps. After a minute or so it returns to about the 40 or so avg I've been experiencing but trying to do another change to fullscreen from borderless after having attempted it just a second ago causes the game to essentially freeze altogether. Thus freezing up my PC. I couldn't do anything, I had to shut it down completely.
I don't know what is up with this game all of the sudden. I've had optimization issues with it on PC before but this is just unstable and nothing I'm doing is fixing it. I feel like I'll need a support member's help.
