Re: Enquiry if to get a new laptop or not

@BaybiEls  A new entry-level gaming laptop would run Sims 4 significantly better than your current one.  Whether it's "worth" buying a new one is really your call: does a smoother game with shorter loading times justify spending somewhere in the $700-850 U.S. range, or a bit more in other countries?  It's really an individual decision.

If you do decide to get a new laptop at some point, feel free to come back for advice, whether it's a second opinion on whatever you've already picked out or a list of good options or a description of what hardware to look for.  I'll be around.

@BaybiEls  What I'd recommend depends in large part on your budget and current prices at any given moment.  A great laptop for $700 is not necessarily even a good option at $900.  And for the same price, it's usually better to get a higher tier of hardware than a more premium laptop with weaker components, that is unless the premium laptop has a feature you need.  That doesn't even take into consideration what newer hardware may be available in a few months.

Point is, when you're ready to buy, come back and let me know your budget and country, and what kind of advice you're looking for, and I'll be able to give you a more specific answer.

@BaybiEls  If you'd like specific recommendations, please come back when the Black Friday sales are just starting, and I'll list the best options I see in your price range.  Or if you'd prefer to do your own shopping, let me know your budget (now or later), and I'll tell you what kind of hardware to look for and what to avoid.  I really can't do better now because I have no idea what exact models will be available and on sale.  There will almost certainly be something decent for under £700 though, and a reasonable number of good options in the £700-800 price range.

@BaybiEls  What model iMac are you considering?  Some would be great for Sims 4, but the base model might not be, and a used Intel iMac would probably not be a good idea, at least not the ones priced lower than a new entry-level iMac.

In particular, I would strongly recommend getting at least 16 GB RAM and 512 GB storage.  But that raises the price significantly, as you can probably see for yourself.  The problem is neither memory nor storage can be upgraded at all—you're stuck with whatever you buy.  And for the record, each upgrade probably costs Apple about £20 rather than the ~£200 it charges customers.

@BaybiEls  If you're happy with it, and it has at least 16 GB RAM, this iMac should run Sims 4 great.  While the M4 chip is new, I'd expect reports of issues by now if it didn't run Sims 4 correctly, and I do know of a couple players who've bought one.

From a financial standpoint, I do want to point out that you'd save money by buying a Mac Mini and a standalone screen.  The screen would likely not be as good, but it could also have other features you might want.  But that doesn't have anything to do with performance, which, again, should be fine on this M4 chip whether the chip is packaged into an iMac or a Mac Mini or a laptop.
