Sims 4 constantly crashing

For nearly a month now, my Sims 4 game consistently crashes. Sometimes it's immediately after the loading screen, sometimes I can get about 20 minutes of play in. I do not have any content that does not come from a Sims expansion pack that I purchased through the EA app. I have tried:

  • Restarting/completely shutting down the computer and booting it back up.
  • Repairing the game through the EA app.
  • Uninstalling and re-installing the Sims.
    • Recently I have been trying to play without the For Rent pack and the Island Living pack as we read on google these packs have been causing some people issues
  • Uninstalled and re-installed the EA app
  • EA app recovery
  • Tried playing offline (made the game crash faster)
  • Updating the graphics card
  • Updating the computer
  • Pulling the entire Sims 4 folder out of the larger EA folder and restarting game with a clean EA folder

Computer Specs:
Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-14900KF   3.20 GHz
64 GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090

I feel like we have tried everything that we've found on Google. I don't even care if I have to start my world from scratch at this point. I just want to be able to play the game. The new pack with fairies and plants looks so cute!

  • I am having this exact same problem. It's been like it for the last 6 weeks and i have tried everything like you to fix it with no luck! We have pretty much the same specs too except i'm running a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 Super. If anyone has any suggestions i'd greatly appreciate it as i'm out of ideas!

  • inmywonderland  I see you're running Sims 4 in DirectX 9 mode.  Does it work better in DX11 mode?  Please try and let me know.  It shouldn't crash in either mode, but this is an easy test.

Aside from that though, a number of players have random, frequent crashes on high-end Intel CPUs like yours.  The underlying problem appears to be that the motherboard overclocks the processor by default, to a degree that makes the game unstable.

This is sometimes fixed by a BIOS update, so look for a new BIOS version for your board.  Your model should be listed in the documentation that came with your computer, or you can find it printed on the board itself, among other places.  Google "[model name] drivers" and look for the manufacturer's support page.  Your current BIOS version is A.C1.

If this doesn't help, try disabling CPU Turbo Boost, which will be in the BIOS somewhere under Advanced settings.  It may be called something slightly different, but "turbo" should be in the name.

TheDarlingSimmer  You uploaded the original poster's dxdiag, not your own, so I can't check whether you have the associated errors.  But if you do in fact have an i9-14900KF, or another 13th- or 14th-gen K-series CPU, then the above applies to you as well, minus the DX9 part.

Hey thank you so much for all of this! This was the fix!! Updated the BIOS and so far we've been able to play for 3+ hours straight today, so we're pretty sure it's fixed!

Do you know if we're able to drag back in our original Sims 4 folder with all of our old saves? It's not the worst thing for us to have to restart entirely, but figured I'd ask.

Also for the Dx9 thing, I should have put that up in the bullets as something we tried initially to fix the game. I just forgot we did it since it didn't help. We normally ran the game in Dx11.

    Thank you again!!

  • inmywonderland  I'm so glad to hear that.  You can definitely test your old saves now if you want, although I'd move them alone to the new Sims 4 folder rather than restoring your old folder.  If you have any mods or custom content you'd like to use, test those first, also in the new folder, and remove or update anything that makes the game stop working.

Aside from that, you'll probably want to keep the contents of Tray, which holds saved households and builds, and possibly Screenshots and Recorded Videos.  The rest can be discarded.
