@jnub64 Play out the event points as fast as possible. Open those packs. Maybe you will get coins but you know you will get two items. Use your crafting materials to get the 2 or 3 items you can with those. Then keep playing and dont buy the rest of the stuff until a couple days before the end of the event at least. If there are any event items in store that give an item immediately always buy those before buying the event packs.

Spending money to open regular packs hoping to get crafting materials is just a waste of time.

For caustic heirloom I bought the store bundles that gave an item plus packs at a discount. I saved a little bit of money.
