UNC: Dead Scientists Service History Bug?

Hi 🙂

I've been completing some UNC assignments in Mass Effect 1, and I found a quest I don't really remember playing before in the original game (though I generally try to keep my ME1 playthroughs as short as possible, something I don't need to do in the Legendary Edition).

The mission was UNC: Dead Scientists, and I fought through mercenaries until I reached someone who had been taken hostage. The mission involved the events of Akuze during the Sole Survivor service history and during the cutscene, there were times Corporal Toombs seemed to identify Shepard as having been on Akuze, and Shepard appeared to understand/agree.

Normally that would be ok, but I've chosen the War Hero service history for my current playthrough, so Shepard had been on Elysium, and had no connection to the Thresher Maw attack, so the dialogue felt very strange.

I found the assignment page on the Mass Effect wiki: https://masseffect.fandom.com/wiki/UNC:_Dead_Scientists and it mentions a bug that can cause Toombs to refer to Shepard as a sole survivor no matter the origin the player chooses. So this seems to be a bug that hasn't been fixed from the first game 🙂

  • Had this happen to me as well. Earthborn War Hero, had not completed Hades' Dogs yet for reference. Toombs' and Shep's dialogue made sense until I chose the paragon option, at which point Shep says something about "I couldn't help then, let me help now" like in the Sole Survivor background.
