Yes, this!
They could use Titanfall anti-cheat too. There apparently have been hackers too, so using Titanfall anti-cheat could solve two problems!
Yo is this gonna happen? I use my desktop for compute reasons (machine learning), and it runs Linux. I want to keep doing the machine learning while being able to play games.
- @3enilly Maybe use WSL for your ML work and keep Windows as your main OS? I had to resign to such things if I really want to game.
This is unfortunately not an option, especially because I need to reliably change my kernel for backwards-compatibility purposes.
Valve has announced Steam Deck. It's a handheld PC that's supposed to eventually run all games of the Steam library, and it runs Linux.
From Valve's FAQ (https://partner.steamgames.com/doc/steamdeck/faq):
My game uses anti-cheat, which currently doesn’t work with Proton - how do I get around this for Steam Deck?
We’re working with BattlEye and EAC to get support for Proton ahead of launch. So Apex Legends should work on Linux soon. How's the progress?
Also, will this sort of translation layer be officially supported? I'd feel bad if it weren't and I could inadvertently see through walls due to missing textures every now and then, but if it is official, then that's Respawn's issue, not mine.
An inclusion in practise.
Titanfall 2 is running just fine on WINE 5 and above. Proton has some issues with getting Origin to actually start but that seems to just be me. The anticheat is literally the only obstacle. Once that is working, Apex should be ready to play. While we're on the subject though, let me just remind everyone that EAC is garbage, does not work, and this is an example of why DRM solutions hurt genuine players and do nothing to stop real bad actors. Respawn, please take note.

Valve has pushed several commits to both Proton and WINE, and they're responsible for really pushing gaming on Linux further into the mainstream lately. It's likely that most developers will jump on board now that they are more motivated to do so. Also, about those graphical bugs you mentioned, Apex runs on the same engine as TF|2 and uses mostly the same assets, and that game runs just fine with zero problems. If one works, so should the other.

The funny part is that the engine is the Valve's Source engine. The engine that runs TF|2, TF2 (lol), CS:GO, Dota 2...
