I'm not sure if I posted this for you before, but the results my son got and feedback from others were very positive.
There is a workaround to help improve footstep sounds on pc, outlined in the first post in the below thread: (also on xbox 1S with DTS settings and ps5 with headphones and there are other suggestions in the thread)

However, from my experiences the software I use to record with didn't like capturing audio while the audio program was installed and several applications, (such as Discord), was bugging out to where my mic wasn't working.
Furthermore after about a week of using the program, the audio had a noticeable decline, where it was reverting back to how it was before. (This could of been because my headset at the time was at the end of its lifespan).
Overall this solution works, it just doesn't benefit me in the same way it does for your son. Thank you though.

@Midnight9746 that's a pity. It only worked in that it mainly lowered the bass hugely and a bit more focused the footstep noise. There was a sacrifice to be made to the aural landscape when you use it, shouldn't be like that though. My son didn't care about a rich aural landscape, all he cared about was the footsteps.
That's an interesting observation on other audio proograms not liking to run properly at the same time. I wonder if it was some sort of driver conflict (above my paygrade).
The reversion within a week sounds odd. Maby the settings/sounds got changed in an update with Apex or sonic.
My xbox is awful for lack of footsteps in Apex by comparison. At least with fortnite I have bang on visualised footstep audio.
The software, Steel Series Sonar (SSS) That OTC suggested works for me with Discord no problems maybe there is something else interfering with your discord and SSS setup.
I have recently purchased a Steel Series headset to go with the program and that makes things work even better than my old non Steel Series headset. Food for thought, if you are still looking for a new headset.
- @Asmodeus566 I use Razer, and currently can't get another headset. Although, I've said this before, we shouldn't have to download 3rd party software just to be able to hear what we should already be able to hear. The problem SSS has, might be related to Razer Synapse, as Razer has its own thing for audio.
@Midnight9746 have you looked at the SSS eq apex preset? Maby you would be able to emulate it on the razer eq?
