Comparing Newcastle: Some Anecdotal Experiences that make him feel underwhelming

So personally, I really want to main Newcastle, but playing him feels like a handicap in almost every single aspect. Let me explain what I mean (note experiences are anecdotal):

Common Situation: An ally is down nearby in a mid range firefight.

  • As Newcastle, I throw down a mobile shield and try to drag them to safety. The enemies see I am dragging them and all thirst, wrecking the third teammate then me. Even if I get the revive, they get wrecked instantly.
  • As Mirage, I distract the enemies and revive cloaked. If the enemies don't see me reviving and don't thirst. Teammate usually lives if they don't see me reviving.
  • As Lifeline, I body block for the downed person if they have no knockdown left and let them get to cover, throw a passive revive and a drone. They revive and quickly have full health.
  • As Rampart, I throw down cover in front of them, blocking enemy line of sight. Suppress them with the turret, then revive. The enemies usually don't see me reviving them behind the cover and don't thirst.
  • As Gibby, throw the dome and provide cover. If they thirst try to throw the airstrike on us.
  • As Caustic, throw a trap and shoot it, use the gas to cover their escape. Revive them in an active gas trap behind cover. If they thirst throw ult.
  • As Crypto, throw drone to keep lookout and try to recover them.

So far in my time with Newcastle, nearly every other character I play is better at reviving than the character who is supposed to be about reviving.

I know people were all "Newcastle is going to invalidate lifeline/rampart/gibby" but so far I have yet to encounter a situation where Newcastle did better than any one of them. I always feel like my abilities are mostly trivial in every fight and I am just walking shoot me sign with an inferior gun shield to gibby.

Ability wise his kit is very underwhelming for his hitbox. Gibby has an invincible dome and can shoot with his shield up, Lifeline has infinite healing, a passive revive, and provides teammates with nearly guaranteed purple shields if they live. Rampart can shoot through cover and has a very useful weapon on call. What does Newcastle have? Three rampart walls that provide full cover on an ultimate cooldown, a mobility option that really should not be used as a mobility option given its an ultimate, a finicky tactical barrier that is not infinite, has limited cover, can not be shot through, is very messy with the angle it faces, and moves rather slowly outside of the initial throw. And a passive that honestly provides very little of value. If you could revive with Newcastles passive and live, odds are it was either a sniper fight, or the person did not even need to be moved or protected in the first place. All around nothing about Newcastle feels useful for being such an easy to hit target.

Even when I encounter an enemy Newcastle I mostly only ever see them use their tactical, very rarely their ult, and I have so far to date never seen an enemy Newcastle drag someone. Never. I know its anecdotal, but surely I would see at least one enemy Newcastle do it given how often I try to. Like it baffles me that I have played the knockdown shield mamba plenty of times as Newcastle, but I have never once shot a Newcastle passive shield myself.

    Newcastle is a strange Legend.

I guess you can play more aggressively with Newcastle and it's always a case of learning how he can be used in the best way.

I don't play him. But you forget you can cancel his revive and play off of his Res shield whilst your teammate uses it as cover and fires on the enemy (assuming they haven't been knocked too) Lol

Plus you've effectively moved your downed team mate a bit faster and farther than he would have moved by himself and he also hasn't had to use their own knock down shield to protect himself.

His added ability to reposition quickly he can be used to scout and leap back to the safety of their team.

So he's quite versatile really. But a lot to think about which makes him harder to learn.

I may try using him a bit more.
