@wydeeye The sad thing is, if the penalty system only counted when players leave on their own, then players could close out of the game, (hitting alt F4 on PC, or hitting the menu button and then closing the game on consoles), turn off their system, or do something like unplugging their Wi-Fi to get disconnected from the match.
When the system was first added, we had players "dashboarding", which was getting back to the Xbox/PlayStation home menu without "quitting" Apex, which meant that players could leave matches without losing RP. This isn't allowed and from what I know of, its been patched.
What we need is something in place that can detect crashes, (including when the server itself crashes).
If its the game that crashed, it should:
- Allow the player to rejoin the match. If they can't due to their team being dead, it would send them back to the lobby with the points they've earned up to that point.
If the server crashed, it should:
- Send everyone back to the lobby with the points they've earned up to that point. Its not fun being punished when its the server itself crashing.
The biggest problem with the penalty system, is that most crashes would tell the game that you had left. (This is why you can't rejoin). Sometimes the errors you get can remove you from the match as well. These things should either not punish you when it removes you from a match, or not remove you at all. If you ever had a teammate who was moving and then became a deathbox, this is what had happened to them, (unless they were banned). However, if you see the disconnect icon next to their name when they became a deathbox, you can assume they either crashed or had an error that kicked them out of the match.
Yeah I’m aware of those types of exploitable situations and that’s why I mentioned if there has to be some level of point deduction then they could just have it use the entry cost amount. But to be clear I posted that in a heated state because I had just had that unfortunate experience, so my thoughts weren’t fully refined. And additionally, I’m obviously not a dev/professional so there’s definitely gonna be some factors I overlook with my ideas. That being said I at least wanted to throw some ideas out there even if I knew they needed to be expanded upon by professionals.
I actually agree on your idea regarding a crash detection system and I’ve actually had that thought as well, but again I was in a narrow headspace, so I didn’t think to mention it. But everything else you mentioned makes sense too and I think it’s totally worth the devs considering.
Thank you for your input and constructive criticism!
