Did I have an unusual experience or is Apex's community the most toxic ever?

First a brief summary of my history with the game for context, I played APEX a little bit on PS4 when it released but i only played 2 or 3 games before i stopped because i knew i was saving up for a new PC and didn't want to have to relearn the game again when i switched from console too PC. I finally saved up enough for my PC and finally got around to giving the game a try on PC for the first time yesterday. Needless to say my skill in the game is about where you would expect for someone who has less than 5 hours total playtime in a game that to my understanding has a decently high skill ceiling. Making matters worst was the fact that even though this game is in season 2 apparently a good number of the player base still don't understand that while trying to solo isn't a viable tactic unless your score card looks like one of the kill leaders, and even then winning solo would take some luck. Also the previous sentence is assuming you where lucky enough to get in a game that actually has 3 players connected and playing the game to begin with which was a hilariously rare occurrence in the games i tried before i decided to join the Apex's official discord and try to find an organized group to teach me the game, which is where i got this gem of a story.

When i joined the discord I didn't want to waste anyone's time or make them have a bad time made it clear that my experience with the game was nearly 0 and my game play would probably actually start multiple dumpers fires but if they where willing to tolerate that then i'm willing to listen and try my best to follow the leaders orders. I ended up in a group with someone who appeared to have played the game for quite a while, and a second party member who appeared to be a little more experienced than myself but still struggling a little bit. The more experienced person seemed to be at least mechanically better than both of us, honestly i wasn't skilled enough at the game yet to tell, but his leadership skills truly left something to be desired. He knew he was playing with new players and we where basically willing to follow his lead but he wouldn't call any shots and didn't even know where he wanted to drop. I actually ended up having to shot call myself with only roughly 2 hours of game experience under my belt and that wen't about as well as you could expect. Naturally the more experienced player got upset because the games weren't going well and left and if that there where the end of the story then i wouldn't be here but it's not. After the more experienced dude left me and the other less experienced person decided to stay in that voice channel and continue playing. I don't know if the guy who left had multiple accounts or told his friends to come harass us but i'm leaning towards the first one because I find it hard to believe that this individual has friends, much less friends willing to harass a stranger for being bad at a video game but i digress. Either way after the dude left I got 3 more visitors the first one asked  if we would like some "ear *" before attempting to blow our speakers out, the second just pretended who wanted to play then called us trash and left and 3rd verse was same as the second. At that point i just uninstalled the game because i don't need that kind of negativity in my life.

Honestly the only reason i'm making this post is i'm genuinely curious  is this behavior normal for this games player base? I obviously don't have a great sample size because this story only lasted about an hour and a half in actual time and then i uninstalled the game so please share your stories below. And if you are one of the people who harass new players for being new and bad honestly what do you think you are gaining by driving them away.  If you have new bad players you got easier targets to drive your KD up and then you can have even more fun stroking your massive egos. If you are worried about getting those bad players on your team all i have to say is get good because this is one of the few team based games where if you are good enough you can actually solo entire teams. And on a more serious note if you want your game to survive in the long term you want more players not less. It's actually pretty hilarious that the discord for Spellbreak a battle royal that isn't even out of alpha yet is more populated than Apex's and driving away people who had a desire to learn the game surely isn't going to help those numbers. I have gamed for many years and have spent a good number of years playing games with communities renowned for their toxicity such as League of Legends, Dota 2, Overwatch and the list goes on but, i have never seen something quite like this. It's one thing to harass bad teammates while you are being forced to play with them, not that i condone it but i at least understand it. However i can't understand what anyone would have to gain from going out of their way to  harass someone they know is new for being bad at a video game?
