There are not enough players!
All players are separated through different platforms and different servers (and of course they are not all active 24/7). So separating players on your server and platform to 6 groups (as you suggested) will significantly increase the waiting time in queue before each match. This will be much more annoying for Ranked players on diamond, plat and preds.
If you check this forum you will find people already annoyed on waiting +15 min for a ranked match to start, now imagine you increase that by 6 times...
This will be only possible if they introduce cross platform first.
I get there are not enough players at the moment and the reason is because people want a choice, and not stuck having to take a map they don't want.
So yes, for now it might be slow, but once people see this, well let's just hope it improves.
