Personally i find the idea of NPC's a terrible idea. Not only do they cost a magnificent anmount of server resources but will greatly inbalance the natural gameplay.
Enviromental traps are okay i suppose, over time however people will figure out exactly what to do and thus make those traps/risks less trappy/risky.
Just dropping my thoughts.
One other thing to amend, say perhaps the NPC you kill always drops a Gold item, or has it's own loot table, then you've kind of blended a Borderlands aspect into the game. Just saying, the more I think about it, the more I think it would make the game a lot more exciting than it already is.
I see where you are comming from.
I for once do not enjoy pve or even pve elements a single bit so i still think its a terrible idea.
Guess it comes down to preference and how much is possible without interfering with players like me.
