I agree. 100s of dollars for a guaranteed set of Heirloom cosmetics is very outrageous but at least when you draw shards you have a reason to feel happy and content for unlocking cosmetics worth $500.
I would definitely feel really mad at the developers if the Melee Weapons did extra damage though. Luckily every Heirloom item is purely cosmetic and grants absolutely no competitive advantage.
Some people get insanely lucky for example this YouTuber who opens 39 Apex Packs and gets the Wraith AND Bloodhound Heirloom sets.
He then buys the Fight or Fright entire store to unlock the Lifeline Heirloom set:

I wish you the best of luck with unlocking an Heirloom set.

I actually have not gotten an Heirloom myself! I know exactly how to get them but it is either luck based or very costly, which is why I am kinda struggling.
I really want Heirloom Shards, but I don't know which set to buy! It's a case of getting the set for my main (Wraith), a character I am also really good at (Bloodhound) or a matter of looks (Octane).
Similarly to you, I have given up on spending my entire time playing just trying to get Packs, hoping for the shards and then sighing sadly when it's a blue Mozambique skin and 2 grey legend skins. I now just wait patiently for the day I finally draw these insanely rare shards while enjoying the game!
