How do you get Heirloom Shards in Apex Legends?

So I know that you have a chance to get a bonus Heirloom Shard Pack whenever you open an Apex Pack. The part I am stuck on is what are your chances and how many Apex Packs do you need to open to be guaranteed to unbox Heirloom Shards?

I would also  extremely appreciate any tips and tricks to help me obtain this insanely rare currency. I really want the Heirloom set for Wraith as she is my main.

    @CompleatBeet You get them randomly from the crates with items in them. You have a 1 in 500 chance to earn one. This mean every 500 packs is 100% to earn you enough shards for a heirloom. You can get it any time between the 1 and 500 once obtained the box count starts over. Hope this helps!

    Thank you! I really appreciate your help.

    As a Wraith main I really want her Heirloom Set. Do you have any tips to help me get the shards a little quicker? I know you can pour £500/$500 into it and get them, but that isn't very convenient especially during the current worldwide pandemic. Also, is there any way to know how many Apex Packs you've opened? That would be very helpful.

    Again, thanks so much for the quick response and your help: I would really appreciate it if you could help me a little more by answering my above questions, including if you have any tips to get more packs without spending too much money on Apex Coins and if there is a way to know how many packs you have opened.

    If you get to level 500 you have opened 198 packs so you only need 302 more to 500.but remember that doesnt mean the game gives you the heirloom after opening 500 boxes you might get it sooner.btw you can get more packs by getting the battle pass
