You pretty much hit the nail of the head when you said, "the goal is to funnel more players and tempt more players into spending more money." The whole point of free event loot is to be SO BAD that players feel subjectively that their options are to quit the game or spend real money. It is a business after all. Good will alone won't keep the lights on at EA. Which is lucky for them as I'm pretty much convinced that players' good will is something they haven't experienced in decades now. They used to treat players like garbage in the interest of shareholder value. Now that they're privately held I expect things to get even worse. Not sure HOW they could get worse, but I feel confident that they'll find a way.
