Please fix the rank system
The ranking system in Apex is broken.
There are several problems with it which I will outline here, please understand I want the game to improve and hear me out.
1. Dropping a tier and a half every split is unhealthy for the game.
- Why is this bad?
This is bad because when masters and pred players take a single season off of ranked, they end up in Silver lobbies. After just one season off, they're now in lobbies far lower than they should be ruining the experience for players who actually belong there. I'm in Gold right now working my way back to plat so that I can hopefully grind for diamond this season and this is what I queue into:
How can we fix it?
First of all, we want to remove this demotion, with no demotion at all, this problem is solved, however we introduce a new problem. When someone who hasn't played for a while and is quite rusty comes back, they'll have to play in lobbies that are too difficult for them. Normally this wouldn't be a problem since they would just have a couple bad games and fall back into the lobbies where they belong, but with Apex there is a tier demotion protection which prevents that. Without this protection, the rusty player will fall back into lobbies they can handle until they improve back to the skill level they once where. This is the next point.
2. Tier demotion protection is also unhealthy
Why is it bad?
When a player finally hits that new tier where they've just advanced into harder lobbies, they often find themselves hard stuck in the bottom of that tier. They can't gain rp because their skill level hasn't quite made it there yet, but they also can't lose rp because of the demotion protection. So they start playing ranked like its pubs. pushing teams when it isn't in either team's best interest, throwing the game for both their team and the other. This is because rp is no longer valuable to them. By removing tier demotion protection, we can make rp valuable even at the bottom of a tier.
What can we do to fix it?
Remove tier demotion protection.
3. The RP system is broken
What is wrong with it?
The RP rewards of kills and placement incentivizes the wrong play styles for a healthy game. Placement incentivizes sitting around in a building all game waiting for the ring to close, and kp incentivizes third parties. Furthermore the balance between the two is far too heavily weighted to the kp side of it. Just in a recent ranked game I played with my friend, we got 2nd place and he had 0 kp. That does not mean however he didn't do anything. He was extremely valuable to our team in other ways but he only received 30rp. I think his performance in this and many other situations was worth more than 30rp.
How can we fix it?
This one is a little bit more tricky. Apex is not a zero sum game and therefor an elo system is not a trivial problem. First, having a team based kp system will be a step in the right direction. Furthermore I think extra points for other positive actions will be extremely helpful (for example reviving or resurrecting a teammate, scanning the survey beacon, etc... ). There are more actions that would be nice to offer points for like portalling/padding/relaunching your team out of danger, opening a clutch black market when your team is low on supplies, pulling off a clutch 1v3 etc but these are a lot harder to implement.
Overall, Apex is a great game and I really want to see it succeed, but the ranked system right now is incredibly unhealthy and needs to be addressed.
