@Bones3O I believe the way it works is within a certain amount of time, like maybe 20 seconds. But normally when you're knocked, the credit goes to the guy still up because the game only awards people who can fight. It simply assumes you can't do anything.
If you knocked someone, and then someone else killed them 5 seconds later - the assist becomes yours. But if that player crawls around for some time, the game wouldn't count that as an assist or anything. Unless they die by bleed out, then you get the kill. Otherwise being killed by anyone else after that short time, the kill seems to be theirs.
The only time I've seen a kill be yours, is if you hit them last and then the ring took them out. That's the only damage they can take, and from what I've known; that is different because I've played a game where a Wraith got away from me, and was running through the ring for like 40 seconds.
