Re: Linux Feedback Megathread

I get home and turn on my PC, boot up Steam and find that one of my favorite FPS games in the last few years has dropped support for Linux. I don't have the option to install Windows whatsoever.

So, I can't play the game for one, and that sucks. What really stings though, all the Apex coins I have in my account are just going to go to waste now? What about the collection event that I bought into for heirloom shards that I was waiting to use once my favorite legend got her heirloom? All of that, I'm gonna just not get any use out of?

I spent money on this game and now I've been screwed out of it? This seriously feels like a big "f*** you" to me.

My 16 year old son is in tears, a rather uncommon thing. He's spent over $300 on Apex Legends of money that is hard for him to come by because he loves the game. He just discovered that he can't play it anymore because linux support was cut.

it just isn't right that a customer, especially one who has invested so much time and money into this game suddenly finds his platform banned.

Can you seriously rethink this? If not, what about refunds for all those purchases?

Please consider what you are doing when you have people this invested in a game and you cut them off for no fault of their own. Trust is lost. My son worked for his money, spent it on this game, invested a lot of time in this game, just got gut punched, and what? He's expected to learn to live with it now?

    Fix this!

I get you guys are upset, but dont be angry at Respawn for this, better be angry with the people that used your OS of choice to get the unfair advantage !

With Spocks words : “Logic clearly dictates that the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.”

And its not that those coins are gone for good ... a Win10 license doesnt cost an arm and a leg.

  • And as Captain Picard said; "The first time any man's freedom is trodden on, we're all damaged."

Based off Steam's stats, 2% of people use Linux, and the game has about 150k players at peak. If we're being incredibly generous and assume 30% those people on Linux are cheating, that's 0.6% of the entire PC population, or 900 people in total. Meaning 2100 innocent people are getting screwed over for the sins of others.

It's generally accepted that the majority of people who play the game are on console. If that's true, then something isn't adding up. No way 900 people on the platform with the smaller share of users are the game's biggest source of cheaters.

Wih this many cheaters soon the only way to play multiplayer games will be offline. Just remember, they could close Apex mobile at any time, closed Apex on Linux, and will close whole Apex Legends at any time they want. You are playing live game service that can go down at any moment. You don't own anything.

Hey there, when it comes to linux this operating system was never supported by EA/Respawn. The only reason it had seen updates is due to Steam Deck. Its default operating system is linux. Now that it has the option to become a windows operating system there is no need for linux. Overall though they never supported linux in general only the steam deck. Linux just so happened to work due to the deck. Even when you view the games system requirements every site online will state windows is the required operating system.

@quadeamadoryou might be right, if it would be only steam installations ...
i guess your numbers come from most people taking the Steamcharts as an indicator of how many people on PC play Apex and that approach is kinda wrong.
You can easily install the EA App/Origin with Lutris, no steam account involved.
And i bet the reason why they stopped Apex being run on Linux is the fast growing number of cheaters using that method.
I dont wanna go into the details , bcs that could be seen as advertising cheats on this forum, but if you dig deeper into the topic you likely see why Respawn had to take those steps.
Only that much, when you look at a infamous support website for those kind of things, you can see hundreds of thousands of views especially on those linux cheat topics for Apex.

  • I'm with you on this. So many hours and coin wasted just because of a literal handful of bad actors. Instead of investing in better anti-cheat methods they've taken the cheap route and harmed totally innocent players. I refuse to go back to Windows. My performance was better on Linux than it ever was on Windows as well.

I'm upset and as crazy as this sounds, Apex was my comfort game. It was a nice mindless FPS when things got tough.

It's been a wakeup call for me at least. I'm not buying a single damn in-game currency or item ever again. So much money wasted on things I'll never be able to see again.

  • No one has used Linux to develop cheats for Apex Legends. EA are just saying that, so they have something to blame the change on. In order to develop a cheat on Linux, you would have to go through Proton, Wine AND Steam, in order to write something which would work on Windows. So everyone are perfectly right for calling out EA and Respawn Entertainment for such a change.
