I guess one thing you could do to improvise, if you have audio software with a graphic equaliser, would be to play around with the high and low frequencies to see if you can pick out the footsteps more clearly. I know that some software does come with presets for different game genres to be able to hear other players more clearly which usually means just reducing the bass and increasing the treble.
