Bloodhound Rework

Bloodhound is one of the original 8 legends and through various years of updates they have fallen behind the curve in terms of usefulness in the game. Their niche of the "tracker" legend has been taken over in many ways by newer additions and their ultimate is borderline useless compared to others in the the game and they are in the bottom 5 played legends. I'd love to see a rework to my favorite character in the upcoming couple seasons to bring them back to a place where they are useful to bring to a squad. 

Here are my current problems with them:

  1. Useless ultimate: In my personal opinion, bloodhounds ultimate is one of the worst in the game. It's only benefits are the 30% speed buff, and the ability to in theory continue scanning  indefinitely granted you continue to get knocks and scan the raven. In practice however, this is highly dependent on where the enemy is, and oftentimes is not useful because in the time you take to pull out your scan and track the bird, you could get melted by the rest of the team you are fighting. Lastly, although the black and white vision with red enemy highlights may be cool, this effect only helps you and is marginally useful at helping distinguish enemies at best. So overall, the ultimate is essentially a glorified octane stim. Comparing this to other legends, there's simply no reason to bring bloodhound . Ballistics ultimate also gives that 30% movement buff, but it gives you significantly better buffs, like weapon handling, infinite ammo, and on top of that some buffs apply to the whole team.  Seers ultimate also has a wider area of effect and helps the whole squad. In general my primary issue with bloodhound is how underwhelming and unimpactful their ultimate feels and if anything is to change about them, it would be a direct or indirect improvement or change to the ult. 
  2. Scan duration: Despite being the posterchild for the recon subclass and the "scan character" in my opinion, bloodhounds scan is comically underpowered. Seer's scan lasts twice as long and applies a silence (and as of this last season also gives him a speed buff) Valk's skydive scan tracks people through walls and in a massive area, crypto (also in a bad state) has a theoretically indefinite scan as long as his drone isnt shot, and most recently: sparrows scan can do it all! All that bloodhounds scan does is give a 1 second full body scan, then an additional 1 second of partial scan. In general, due to there being so many "scans" in the game now (bang smoke, Fuze ult, altar port, maggie passive, mirage clone, most recons, etc), bloodhounds doesn't feel very special.

Despite some overlap with Crypto's passive, Bloodhounds passive is very unique and I see no need to change it. In accordance with the previous gameplay updates made to legends with outdated kits, I think any changes to the legend should maintain their Identity. As the original scanning legend, because they are a recon character, and to maintain character as a legendary hunter, I propose the following potential changes to their kit to maintain a fun gameplay loop:

  • Allow the ability to scan with gun out: many legends have received this quality of life change and I think that bloodhound is due for their turn. The ability to scan while having my gun out would make fighting while in ultimate much more natural, instead of having to wait for the opportunity to scan. Having bloodhounds scan be something you pull with a button press, then activate with the release similar to Ash, Ballistic, or Octane would be a welcome change. The current animation would need to be changed,  and my thought would be to let them pull out a bird on their arm like in the heirloom inspect animation and have the bird press the scan button on their arm. This would be a cute "pet interaction" in a similar vain to vantage's bat. If any change is made to bloodhound ever, this would be #1 on my list.
  • Changes to scanning: Bloodhounds scan should likely receive a buff of some kind, ideally in the form of a duration increase. A potential rework that would make the scan more dynamic would be to make it so that upon activation you scan ahead like you currently do, but instead of a full body scan you only reveal the location of targets. During an arbitrary duration (lets say the partial scan is 3 seconds), you could choose to reactivate the ability to receive the full body scan on the target. This would allow you to begin to engage a team and figure out where the are in a building, then reactivate the full body scan when you need to see them through walls. This is just a suggestion, in general a increase to some numbers would probably suffice. 
  • Change to perks/gameplay loop: currently, the Odin's glare and Sightsound perks aren't very useful in my opinion. Due to the short scan duration, changing from a 1 second full body scan to the 2 second one isn't really that big of a change to be preferrable over the ult charging perk. And Reducing tact cooldown isnt that useful for a bad tactical so I never end up getting it. Changes to other parts of his kit would influence which perks are better but as of right now I never choose that side of the tree. Moving the Raven's blessing perk to a passive would give more options for what to choose when building your perk tree in a given game.
  • Ultimate changes: I think the idea that  you can extend your fight indefinitely with scans is a good idea and it should be the main focus of Bloodhounds ultimate. If Beast of the hunt is going to continue to be a ultimate that only affects Bloodhound, then the buffs they get while in their ult should be increased. Because Bloodhound is a expert hunter, I'm sure they would know how to run quietly. So during the ult alongside the increased movement speed bloodhounds footstep audio should be reduced. Something that could be done to make this "hunt" state more interesting could be to make the bird that gets launched upon activation seek out a specific player, designating them as the target of the hunt. Players being Hunted would receive more damage from bloodhound and upon a knock, the hunt's duration would extend and there would be a new player being hunted. Upon getting the knock you could also gain some regen to help you keep fighting or something. If there is no changes to the mechanics of the ultimate, then duration could be extended upon successful scans which would also reduce tac cooldown, letting you continually scan and keep information on where your enemies are during your ultimate. 

 

Overall I just want something to make bloodhound feel unique by changing their kits to be more expressive. I feel that they always get the short end of the stick (please give them a bunch of crows as a skydive trail for the mythic skin). The characters lore is cool and their design is awesome.

    I agree with a lot of this besides the changes to the Beast of the Hunt audio. If anything I think they should lean more into it being a feral transformation of a man becoming the Apex Predator. The transformation into this creature of the hunt that chases its prey down relentlessly. We already have the feral scream that can be heard from decently far away that gives away a Bloodhound activating BotH, as well as the heavy metallic breathing as they run around the arena. I think there should be a "hunted" debuff on enemy legends that Bloodhound is actively following the tracks of (granted through passive) that makes their own heartbeat overtake a large part of the audio queues they might receive as they succumb to their own fears. Imagine being in the middle of a gunfight and suddenly you get a "Hunted!" alert on your HUD like you would from any other legend interaction, except this time the sound of the bullets and abilities sounding off around you are quickly replaced with the sound of your heart beating with adrenaline and fear. Similar to Seer's heartbeat tracker increasing in intensity with lower health targets, the more active your character is being (running, shooting, mantling etc.) should increase the intensity of the Hunted debuff.

    agree, playing bloodhound is just pointless now. i feel like i wasted my whole 3k+ hours playing bloodhound now. pls respawn make her good 😢
