When you select ranked game mode, the game shows the descriptions "compete against similarly skilled opponents" or something like that, but if you select normal game mode, that text is gone. Also, as far as I know, Respawn has never said they use skilled based matchmaking in normal game mode. So I think its pointless to assume something that "isnt accurate" when said thing may not even exist in the first place.
My personal experience is that there is very little matchmaking for the normal game mode and yes, if you are below average, you will have a hard time winning games but maybe you need to re-think your goals and expectations of the game. A below average player maybe should be content with getting 1 kill per game and gradually become better and better and also gradually change these goals and expectations to higher ones. Most of us who played since week 1 of this game know what Im talking about. We all remember when we were new and just dropped, fought and died over and over and over again in Skulltown or Thunderdome. I mean I was terrible when I started but now Ive gradually become a little better and are now at a K/D of +3 and still (hopefully) improving.
But like someone else also said; you should play ranked if you want a more skilled based matchmaking. You will run into some smurfs here and there but bronze-gold is at least a bit lower level than normal imo.

@Balladalidila Did you just copy paste your old post again on another SBMM post? And dude they confirmed SBMM so at least delete that part of your copy pasta.

Not copy and pasted but the answer to two almost exactly the same posts should be the same, shouldn't it? Because new OPs keeps repeating the same old complaint about "a broken" SBMM as if the SBMM is defined but it isnt. Last Respawn talked about it as far as I know was back in S4 and they NEVER gone into details how a presumed SBMM in this game works. A matchmaking that sorts out the very, very worst but let the rest play in the same lobby IS also a SBMM even though the majority of players will never be affected by it. Also the "low level lobbies", which we know exist, can be seen as a SBMM too. So sure you are right, I should have said "as far as I know, Respawn has never said they use a STRICT skilled based matchmaking in normal game mode". My bad.
Bottom line is that the general threads on SBMM on this forum are stupid since people assume there is a strict SBMM but now is "broken" since they get matched against better opponents than themselves. In my experience, the SBMM for solo players in public games is rather weak. I get teamed WITH useless teammates most of the times, but also get teamed AGAINST useless opponents as well. Usually, most teams are made up of one good and two bad-to-average players. I think the matchmaking is much more affected if you play with premades or solo. i.e a matchmaking that tries to put full squads in the same lobby etc.

@Balladalidila Here is the article from the 2020 EA Play event you should have a look at where the game’s creative director, Chad Grenier goes into some detail about SBMM and it’s future.
