Sound Direction (Footsteps & Gunshots)

I only have a problem telling vertical direction. If I'm in a house and I hear footsteps, it seems impossible to say if it's in the same floor or the floor above/below me.

I had this lastnight. I could hear what side the player was on but couldn't make out which level.

This is not always the case though. Sometimes I can pinpoint footsteps easily and other times it causes more confusion than it does help.

I also had a guy run up behind me with zero footstep sound. This is only on the very odd occasion though.

I thought it was just me. Glad someone else as had this issue.
