Apex has always had a good story line and most casual gamers are not really looking to keep grinding daily just to unlock cool looking banners and skins. Instead to keep seasons fresh Apex can be accompanied with a separate telltale game which adds new episodes per season. Each episode can be part of the battle pass and based on how you play the episodes you unlock different skins and dialogue options in the main game.
I think the story in Apex should be a secondary priority.
Instead of allocating resources (funding, effort, data capacity, etc.) to the story, they should be spent on measures against cheaters and smurfs and on resolving character and weapon imbalances so that the core game system functions properly.
Narrative, cosmetics, banning cheaters, game balancing – all those things are handled by different teams. Of course, they are not completely independent (everything needs QA for example), but it’s not impossible to have more narrative for those who want it without sacrificing gameplay enhancements.
Wait until you have properly balanced the game and dealt with smurfs and cheaters effectively before saying that. The status quo proves the point.
I understand that you worry that the focus will be shifted from the things that are important to you. Please don’t – Apex Legends always was a gameplay-first game, and lore-lovers voicing their wishes will not change that.
The issue is that most shooters and battle royale games run into a wall where no new users are joining and old users are leaving because the excitement is gone. Battle royal games are costly to maintain because of servers. Having a telltale game and having the game pass linked to it can be a way to ensure long term revenue because Apex lore is pretty decent and it can be used to keep things "fresh" and hook in new players.
