I think 2 days safter release is a little bit to early to talk about success. Lets wait another few month. Many new games feel great after playing them for 2 days, but can they intrest the player for years? Thats the question here. They have hired Shroud and other big streamer like Ninja to stream the game and hype it up. Of cause people will play it if they see Shroud play it, but will they play it in one year from now?
Its hard to tell why titanfall 1 and 2 never had more players, but i think it was definitely not the wallrun or bunnyhoppings fault, becasue almost everyone loved those mechanics. I personally think titanfall had not enough weapons, not enough stuff to grind for, for the endgame and it forced the players to often to play in a titan, or engage other titans on foot even if they did not like the titan aspect of the game.Beside Multiplayer shooter in general have it very hard todays if they are not team based hero shooter like Overwatch or Battleroyal games. Look at games like Quake Champions, which are great games, but still nobody plays them. For some strange reason its nowadays super hard to set foot on the shooter market.@Maun0_Mato
I dont think there are fixed rules of how much movement can be in a battleroyal. Most existing battleroyals are rather slow, because their developers like those kind of walking simulators, where you have to hike for minutes before you see enemy player. But even many existing BR games have partwise faster movement then Apex has. You can drive cars or vehicles in general in games like Black ops 4 or Pubg and you can run enemy teams over or drive into them with your car. So movement can be very fast in Pubg,Dayz or Black ops 4 if you use a car to drive towards the enemy, or a helicopter to fly over the enemy and then jump or shoot down on him. In some sense Apex feels partwise even slower then those games. And those are BR games. I think their fear is that the 3vs3 gets to chaotic if you can close to the enemy to quickly, but thats rather the fun part, getting in and the enemy trying to react to that.- 7 years ago@2much2kill
You are right that there are no rules but I'm pretty sure Respawn have tried it out already and a good example where it failed was Islands of Nyne which was basically the pace of Unreal Tournament/Quake in BR-environment, it was a jumping simulator and the hype died out quite fast.
You also have to consider the other side of gaming and the best marketing tool out there right now, streaming.
Too fast and too much jumping around not being able to see what's going on is not going to be enjoyable to watch and in the end the game has to be for most types of gamers to be succesful.- 7 years ago
@Maun0_Mato Idk i think they are shooting themselfe here in the foot by not bringing the most intriguing features to their new game. I think what happend is that they had people who mainly stream slow paced games like Pubg or Dayz as gametester and invited them for several month to test the game and give feedback. And of cause streamer who like this kind of slower paced feel in games, where they still have time to interact with their viewers and read their chat because nothing is happening for 90% of the time is favorable for them, but its not that interesting for many of us other gamers, who just want it to feel good. We dont need to read our chat while playing.
I watched yesterday the streamer Annemunition and she said she playtested the game month ago and there it felt way faster, then it does now. And she was almost sure that they reduced the speed of the game by a lot compared to what she played of the game month ago. So i think they catered there to one or two big streamer, who told them the game is to fast for their liking, because they really wanted that said streamer enjoys the game and streams and promotes it a lot.
If nothing else they should at least give you the ability to bunnyhop after sliding down a hill to carry your momentum better. Or as said let you go faster and faster the longer you slide down a hill. And there should be some more movement focused items to find on the map like wingsuite or a TF2 feeling grappling hook, or jetpack and jumpboots.
