We want the Crypto's emote to be fixed, or locked until it's renewed
(Haedong=Haidong)
Our first impression of the emote was 'eh? isn't that Kung Fu?'. Not only the korean community but also non-korean players.
Thankfully, we received a quick feedback from the Senior Social Media Manager for Apex @alex_frostwolf, in Korean (check link). The reply was that it was based on the Korean modern material art "Haidong Gumdo". Yes, the intention was good but the results wasn't telling us that.
I'll say that i'm not an expert in martial arts, and that I searched videos, sites, and words from experienced sports people. The following description is what I found.
Mostly when one is standing with one leg the hands are both on the sword (hands shape like holding a baseball bat, and when one has only one hand on it, they usually kneel or bend their knees.
But the gesture of the emote is pointing a sword in one direction, with on leg up (bending close to 90 degrees), and one behind the head, bended (same direction as the sword hand). The difference is just too big.
If it was based on Haidong gumdo, the leg would be down or the hands would both be on the sword. Even looking through(continue) Youtube or tournament videos obviously show that isn't the base idea of Haidong gumdo. To people who have tried Haidong gumdo it's also a 'eh wtf?'.
Some could say 'How could we know all of that?', but even a novice like me can get that amount of information from just searching. And we know Respawn is capable to have preciseness like gibby's maori-style emote. (continuing) I don't know why this changes when handling asian stuff. It just seems like a mixture of asian-style moves. To people who have tried Haidong gumdo it's also a 'eh wtf?'.
If choosing Haidong Gumdo was because of his upcoming close-range weapon, Respawn should had thought and planned it thoroughly.(continuing) If it's gonna be half-made, he would be better off without a traditional stlye emote. Really. Non-asian people tend to always link asians to their traditional stuff but results? Mostly a mixture of somthin asian-like. Heck, It would be more understandable (continuing) if his closerange wepon was his drone! (He literally hits people with it in the teasers). Always linking martial arts to asian characters seem...a little biased. Yeah we have haidong gumdo and other sports, but a hacker suddenly doing martial-arts with a sword? That seems kinda off too. You don't need to stick more stuff, he's already so-korean (like the korean flag all over the place). I have received words like 'It doesn't have to be 100perc accurate, it's just a game'. But if you started it with real stuff it should be that all the way.
And another problems Apex would face, saying they won't fix the emote. It would be a totally false product people would receive, and yes there would be problems from chinese & korean users since it's obviously 'Kung Fu'-ish. That situation would be kinda tricky because the sensitive atmosphere between K and C. China's government has been these few years, quite invasive with our culture. Seeing Korean stuff in huge television programs, flyers as 'chinese' claiming that it's their culture:from ethnic koreans that settled down in China in the early 20th century. All these quiet 100,200,N-hundred years and suddenly!
A lot of us are happy with this game, so many minor-identity characters that represent our community members. We expect that equally of that to Apex's 'content' , not only characters itself.
We want the emote to be fixed, or locked until it's renewed and want it to be told officially. We hope to get any word from you guys, whether you guys will discuss this issue taking time.
