What’s happening with the skill distribution?

I’ve been playing Apex since the start and as a casual gamer it’s been great but the last few weeks I’ve found myself being up against highly skilled opponents and getting slaughtered.

I have noticed that the skill distribution meter is  always far right and I don’t understand why as have always been on the lower end,

Is this an error in the system or have I suddenly been bumped up for no reason? It’s getting to a point that I can’t play anymore which is a shame since I’ve invested a lot in Apex.

How can I get the skill meter back to where it should be for my capability so I can at least get a kill?

suggestions please .

  • I guess you are talking about pubs.

Skill meter seems to be a joke / fake motivation imo, it always shows "my squad" being on the right side (most skilled), barely ever have been even close to mid-pack, at the same time quality of my squad has remained the same = mostly braindead ego run and gun players with 0 intention to teamwork, especially in pubs. Land fragment or any other place with 10+ teams -> play for less than 1 min -> repeat 100000 times.

Also since season 20 or so there has been a significant influx of LOW LEVEL hackers. It used to be the case that hackers were appearing from D4+ = those who boosted people or wanted to get Master/Pred rewards themselves. But now I see people as low as Gold hacking.

Also much more smufs / bought accounts of level 200, 300 and even 400 where you see that the player is not playing according to that level = breaking the system of matchmaking. Same thing as Valorant smurfing problem = system can't work if significant portion of player base is intentionally breaking it to "farm" kills, stats, cosmetics.

Otherwise I would say that in ranked this season has been the most manageable in quite some time. Low level feeding to Master/Pred still continues but not as much as in past few seasons, Diamond lobbies feel more tolerable even given the fact that you still have to rat / solo most of the games because teammates are just braindamaged. If Respawn would address the fact that 2 our of 3 games contain at least one squad of wallhackers and/or aimbotters I would say that this season would have been the best out of all ranked seasons I have played since season 11. Unfortunately despite all efforts I know going into the game that first 3-5 spots will be taken by hackers or people being boosted and that is constantly the case this season. EMEA is just terrible, NA east still has the same trait but a bit more manageable.

  • Not entirely sure what the skill assessment algorithm is looking at exactly, but...

If you've always been on the left side of the spectrum and are now ending up right side a lot then one of two things is possible. Either the game thinks you're getting better (look carefully at your avg. damage, especially in relation to your avg. match length), or the game is doing what it always does with solo queue players, which is to say, assembling a squad of randoms out of very mis-matched players. If you're getting a run of games where you are the "weak link" and your squadmates appear to be able to hold their own, then scenario two is what you're experiencing. Or possibly a combination of both.

Good test to try: Do one match "no fill" and the distribution curve you see will show you exactly what mmr the game has currently assigned you. That's the red line on the graph. Without squadmates that data point IS your skill level. If it's higher up the range than you think it should be then you have some work ahead of you to actively push it back down. To do that, essentially stop trying so hard. The less hard you work for your inevitable bad result then the quicker your mmr will come down. But it still won't be fast. If, on the other hand, your mmr is left-ish, more or less where you thought it would be, then you're just on at low population times and the server is scrounging the left side in order to fill right side lobbies. In which case the ONLY thing you have to do is quit and re-queue until you start getting the curve you feel is appropriate. The one thing you DON'T have to do is just accept the match quality the game decides to give you. At least not in pubs.

    Best of luck.

  • This game has no MMR, if it would, there would be no cases where you get a losing streak as D4 yet keep getting matched vs TOP20 current preds that end up most games with 10+KP.

E.g. yesterday I lost like whole level going from mid D3 to almost P1 demotion just because I got hell streak of either hackers on my team (I drop those game via dropping of the map) or smurfs that bluntly show their level badge (combination e.g. level 50 D1 prodigy) or total nubs D4-D3 and us matching vs Hiswattson squad like 2 times in 5 games.

This game as EBMM and it is 100% clear with maybe some MMR here and there but not really.
