What is the field of protection on knockdown shields?

I have my field of view on 80, I see a bloodhound and I go to block their shots.

They fire and obliterate me, the shots visually going through my knockdown shield.

They appeared to have hit my shield, yet my purple 600 points remaining shield took no damage and I died.

Auto rifle or smg is what they shot me with.

As far as I know, nothing can penetrate the shield, so why were they able to hit me like that?

What is the field of protection from knockdown shields?

What must you set your field of view to in order to guarantee visually blocked shots will be blocked?

@Zulkiers If you can get a friend into the firing range, you can knock them and look at them from above to get a better understanding of how much it protects in a match where no one would bother you.
