I don't know the exact reason, though the system wasn't really that great either.
I'd assume that they did this mostly to give the game a fresh coat of paint and to try and make the quality of games better, which partially has worked out.
Back then there were a lot of players that would team up until the end of the game and farm kills by using mobile respawn beacons, which allowed them to manipulate their rating.
New system pretty much made it impossible to do, so I suppose there are some good sides to the newer system.
Whilst it isn't perfect, I think the new system has the potential to become something much more than the previous system, I guess it just takes a long time to make a ranked system better.
After all, people will be comparing it to the previous ranked system, which had been getting updates/changes throughout it's entire lifespan, which is much longer than the current one.

High ranked players were constantly teaming to abuse the system to farm kill points to get a higher rank. (Not low ranked players)
People were constantly complaining about it, suggesting to even remove MRB's and do various of things to get rid of them.
From what I've heard, this definitely wasn't a small issue.
Keep in mind that Apex still has a relatively large playerbase.
Whilst you might have not encountered it yourself, doesn't make it so that it barely happened.
Most players discovered that players were doing this after spectating the final few players, which I doubt a lot of people do.
If the previous system was fine, then there was no need to change it.People farming kills wasn't of course the sole reason for changing a system, that would of course be a bit stupid.
A new ranked system IMO would work well with giving the game a new fresh coat of paint.
Though of course, it takes time for a new system to be improved so match quality goes up.
The previous system may be better in some areas, though once the newer system improves to cover it, there would be no need to return to the previous system.
After all, the previous system has existed much longer than the newer one, so I don't think it's completely fair to compare the 2 in every aspect.
The current system isn't great, though I believe the matchmaker is mostly to blame for it, which would be a completely separate issue.
- 2 years ago@XHelperZ Where do you think they collected the data to start off with the new ranked system? The old seasons of course and then they try to come up with some over complicated matchmaking score system instead of using a more simple natural occuring matchmaking that the old system had.
- 2 years ago@XHelperZ I mean this paint wich this system(sbmm) is giving to apex rn is pretty dark. I have played apex around 1800h (first on origin then on steam), normally would end up somewhere in diamond 1-4.
However i have almost 100 ranked match in this season and im in silver, wich is not problem. Problem is that im playing way too high lobbies compared to my actual rank. Yesterday i was running solo ranked and i end up in same match where champ squad was top 800preds. My team was silver2 master, master.
And for me, "casual gamer" this is so * exhausting. 95.6% of my deaths coming from masters and preds. This all is bcs this hidden mmr i guess. So im not sure if it is this ranked system or very unhealthy sbmm. Im betting strongly on the latter.
