Why I’m Leaving Apex After 3,000h as an MnK Player: Balance Issues

To the Apex Legends Development Team,

I am writing this with a heavy heart as someone who has dedicated over 3,000 hours to Apex Legends and consistently reached Diamond 3 and above. I loved this game deeply, but I have decided to step away because I can no longer get behind the current direction of the game’s updates and balancing philosophy.

The primary reason is the widening gap in the competitive landscape between Mouse & Keyboard (MnK) and Controller players. My criticism isn't directed at the players themselves, but rather at the environment you’ve created. By buffing legends like Octane to force a close-quarters combat (CQC) meta, the inherent advantages of each input have become completely skewed.

In a high-level environment, fights must be finished quickly to avoid getting third-partied. When the meta is artificially pushed toward constant CQC, the claim that "MnK has the advantage at long range" loses all practical meaning. With the increased mobility from Valkyrie and Octane, the game has become a cycle of closing the distance instantly and engaging in "aim-assist-heavy" tracking battles. This doesn't feel like a natural evolution of combat; it feels like a forced playstyle that systematically disadvantages one group of players.

Furthermore, issues like RC filters on controllers allow for zero-recoil consistency at ranges that were previously meant for MnK precision. Even without these filters, the current "snipe-and-ape" meta—using Valkyrie or Alter to instantly close or reset—has made the tactical depth of the game feel hollow.

I've watched the preview for the upcoming legend, and it seems to grant even more movement advantages to controller players, allowing them to utilize slide-mechanics while maintaining sticky aim assist. It feels as though the development focus is heavily tilted towards one side, neglecting the core MnK community that helped build this game.

We have consistently asked for a choice: the option to separate matchmaking pools by input, even if it means longer queue times. Many players switch to the PC platform with a controller specifically to gain an advantage over MnK players, rather than competing on console where everyone has aim assist. By leaving this unaddressed, you are allowing the PC MnK population to bleed out. I firmly believe that strictly separating the platforms would actually lead to a healthier, growing player base in the long run.

I know my individual voice might not change your roadmap. It feels as though the feedback from the MnK community is often secondary to the needs of the controller player base. Because of this, I am letting go of the game I spent my youth on.

I hope that someday this message reaches you and leads to a better future for the game—so that one day, I can return with a smile to the game I once loved.

While I respect your approach to Legend upgrades, I believe players should have the freedom to choose Legends based on their own playstyles, rather than being forced into a "prescribed" meta.

Buffing specific characters every season to dictate how the game should be played doesn't feel like you are respecting the players; it feels like you are stagnating the game's diversity. Those who cannot adapt to these forced shifts quickly lose interest. Instead of trying to change the game through over-tuned weapons, AMP, respawn beacons, or specific Legends, I wish you would stay truer to the core essence of a Battle Royale. Honestly, playing the game right now feels chaotic—from the overwhelming speed of third parties to the lack of tactical flow. It’s hard to find the fun in it anymore. While constant change is good, I hope you strive for a deeper understanding of how Ranked players—especially those in higher tiers—have actually enjoyed the game over the years.

I do want to thank you for the recent updates aimed at solo queue players. I hope to see more focus on fairness across all aspects of the game in the future.

As English is not my first language, I am using an AI tool to help translate my thoughts. Thank you for taking the time to read this long message, despite any shortcomings in the translation.
