After grinding to Diamond this season...

...it hasn't felt worth it.  I'm not sure why I did it other than to say I did, given that Masters last season was a gimme.  Seriously I doubt I'll get to Masters in the few days left.

Predominantly, the experience has been exactly as you might expect - Rank is less a function of ability and most a function of how much time you log in and play this game, giving Respawn what it wants.  What is right about the ranked scoring system is that you shouldn't be losing ranked points if you get to be top 10 in a game.  What is wrong about it is, well, you can't solve the game core mechanics problems with a ranked scoring system.

Apex is never getting fixed, sure, from the point of Respawn won't fix it.  Also, since they won't, because you have to do the hard work of making the game better.  It's a Battle Royale, and it's on a huge map, and it's going to favor certain things.  If you haven't gotten up through Platinum, aside from scads of cheaters, I can tell you there are generally still 14-15 teams left at the start of the third ring closing, often 11 left after the third ring closing.  Which, if you look at the scoring system, means you potentially still end up in negative points.  Nearly the whole game revolves around a bunch of teams dying during and after the 4th ring closing.

This is not to say that last part of the game isn't exciting, but it is to say look at how many minutes it takes to get to that one part of the game.  Forever.  Super grindy, and if you screw it up, like are one of those teams that dies early, you are hit hard and will need to make up your points over 2+ games on average, in other words, double the time.

You certainly can't just take any legend or weapon, in fact, you can't take most.  You do have to switch your game play as you rank up because the things you can use effectively is narrower and narrower.

Anyway, good luck if you are the kind of person this season grinding past Diamond IV.  While the scoring can get better, I really can't imagine the experience ever changing unless Respawn made some other game mode their core game mode.

  • @KelRiever What you mention is exactly the issue- It takes 10 to 15 minutes of nothing to get to even points. There is no alternative to hiding. If you drop edge, you are pretty much stuck if the zone is the other side of the map. There needs to be a reward edge teams that can kill. There is in algs.

I'm surprised you didn't mention the MM, which is I feel is as big an issue. Not being based on current rank is crazy.
  • I don't really know what to say about MM in any game, this one included, except for that I am in the minority who doesn't believe in using it, but the majority in that you should show your formula.

So, because I'm old, my minority point of view comes from that I do not mind playing against people way above my skill level.  Yes, sometimes that means taking it to the face but it is, albeit brutal, how you learn.  The obvious argument against me is that 'you don't learn nothin getting yer face beat in' but I disagree.  Anyway, it's not worth rehashing because it's a circular argument with me.

On the other hand, since it is supposed to be implemented, you should show how you calculate it.  All the arguments against this that I've heard, I'm sorry, sound like BS.  There is no serious sport in the world where they keep how you match up opponents a secret.  The only and sole reason to keep it secret is for a video game company to hide its flaws in its formulas, and for fans who want to believe that keeping it a secret somehow would prove their favorite game company is flawed, which would destroy a part of their identity somehow.

If you showed the MM formula, just like when you show how a player is scored, it reveals the problems.  But it also shows you what you have to do to win.  I think you're right, @hayhor , in that people are simply playing the way the system is.  And as far as MM goes...I mean, it's hidden, so I can only guess at its flaws.  Pretty sure, though, even if MM were ever fixed, that it is kept a secret means you could never prove it was really better, either.

MM's other flaw, I would say, is that, right now, this game very clearly caters to the minority of players, and Respawn has handed its developmental control to the minority who likes it, rather than expanding their game (or more correctly, they somehow believe catering to their minority of players 'who are right' will somehow expand their game 'when everyone else gets it', something like that).  I think the main problem Respawn suffers from is Apex is just a lot less fun now, and yeah, that's on them.  All the reasons you see here, but fundamentally, less fun.  The players, even at higher levels, are less fun, less creative...I'd dare say just even more boring as people and players.  A generalization, there are a few entertainers, but for the most part, very grindy, unoriginal, boring players because they are forced to be to succeed, if for no other reason.

  • @KelRieverI was gonna make my own post about Ranked, but I'll simply agree & add my own experiences.

Between my work schedule, the difficulty of Ranked this season, & the fact that 2042 has been more appealing, Ranked has been super tough to grind. I've been stuck in Silver for the past month or so. On avg TMs are slightly better than the past, but my competition also seems to be worse. And with kills/assts meaning so little it's almost pointless to hot drop or engage early even tho in my lobbies people still do so.

Some games I can get to top 10 by ring 2 or 3 & other games there's still more than 10 at R3!

And if we fight & win against the 1st team early I usually die before top 10. But if we wait & engage after top 10, I can usually make it to top 5. But even if you win w/ at least 3 kills/assts, you're not getting a bunch of points like in previous seasons.

I'm starting to ask myself if the OG system was really that bad cuz ever since they've started messing with the system, seems like things are just getting worse. I'll be lucky to make it to Gold, but plat is def out the window. I have a Master on my friend's list who hasn't even reached Diamond! So this season is def an issue when a legit Master can't even get back there!

I think one of the problems is whether you are bronze, silver, gold, plat...it doesn't matter rank, it still takes forever in points to climb.  You can have an extraordinary game, but unless you place 1st-4th, your point growth is going to be slow.  Even if you are 1st or 2nd, every tier will take about 9-10 of those to move up.

When you hit Diamond, fyi, you are assessed an additional -25 points to climb.  So if you come in 14th or lower, you get -75 points and sure, then add a few kills if you got them.  I can't even try for Masters, it would be beyond the scope I have time in life.  I have, after all, a job.

@KelRiever Thats the thing. It's too grindy. Even if u win. I've been playing most the day with very little progress. Part of me wants to leave it at silver & just grind the BP & spend more time on 2042. Other part wants to at least get gold. I'm currently in S2.
