Well the only source of actual information we have on the subject is the matchmaking post EA made in 2023.
That post in short:
- if you are playing Pubs and get bad teammates, its because you are good and they are trying to make the lobby even skilled.
- if you are playing Ranked and get bad teammates, its because all three of you are bad compared to the rest of the lobby.
With that I have my own EOMM theories on how some days even though I am below average skilled I would get those good teams in ranked.
I would basically fly through certain ranks on one day and then on the next day my games would just be waste of time.
Offtopic: Sometimes I wonder if devs have actually watched any actual sport ever as what could be seen as good quality match. Coaching junior footie I don't mind losing 2-1 if its a close contest as it makes everyone try their best & kids learn the most from close games. Winning or losing big is not that.
Somehow this is still considered well thought-out SBMM recipe. This is why I stopped playing Mixtape since there was hardly ever any middle ground. One team would get absolutely mollywhopped most of the games. I know making a close SBMM is probably very hard thing to do so having totally lopsided SBMM seems like an easy (or even lazy) way to code it...
What I have also noticed is that playing your off meta legends can also have a positive effect on the MM.
I personally havent purchased any Apex content with actual money but I still get those good days every now and then.

That is exactly how it works. In pubs I get it. It's the only way to achieve anything even close to balance over an entire 60 person lobby.
The description of how it works in ranks, which I also believe is 100% accurate, should be enough in and of itself to stop anyone from ever again entering a ranked match as a solo queue player. In ranked play the matchmaker should favor accuracy over speed, but it doesn't and it never will. You get steamrolled by players you should never have been matched against AND you lose RP because of it. That's the definition of adding insult to injury.

I KNEW IT!- r1ggedgame11 months agoSeasoned Ace@reconzero hm, the MM on my end behaves not like its based on speed, especially when there are less players around (2am-6am).
The counter will fill until it hits the 60 Players. In a normal scenario it should start and present me with a team, but instead the counter starts from fresh. This is likely to repeat itself 2-3 times until i get a game. Really feels like the MM is looking for a "specific" matching ...- hayhor11 months agoHero
@r1ggedgameI get the same after a win or a series of early deaths. If it's peak time the MM is faster but you can still tell the lobby has changed.
When I no fill queue it becomes really obvious top 5s with no real damage or kills has a huge effect. It's like I'm a premade.
