Basic Tips for Control Mode

Hey all! I just wanted to share some personal notes and tips from my many years of domination-style game modes across multiple games. Some is common sense, some is stuff I've picked up on over the years, and some will be specific to the quirks of the new Control mode.

This is more for players that might not be familiar with this type of game mode. These are in no particular order of importance (except the first one).  Anyone that has tips that I may have missed or didn't expand on enough, please feel free to share!!

Play the OBJECTIVE!!!: This has to be first. I can not stress enough, how important it is to play the dang objective in not only Control, but any objective mode. You would be shocked by how much even one team mate can effect the situation, when they are just out roaming for kills and not helping the team with the objective. Control is NOT a "deathmatch" mode, so please do NOT play it as such.

Play to your style/strengths: I know the maps are pretty big and allow for ample sniping/long range opportunities, but if you don't snipe, don't worry about trying to force it! While a game mode like this can be perfect to just practice with different weapons and whatnot, if you're genuinely trying to win games, just focus on what is comfortable for you.

Weapon choice: I tend to prefer LMG's on this type of mode, or anything else with a large magazine, as this helps greatly when defending/attacking objectives. Keep in mind, with objective based modes like this, the mode is more of a factor than the map. When defending an objective, remember that you are more likely to have multiple enemies push you at once, as opposed to maybe 1 or 2, so be sure to have a weapon with a big magazine, or something you are confident that you can take out multiple enemies with, quickly. Don't try to sit inside on B with a Sentinel, and expect to wipe out 4+ people pushing in to capture!

Legend choice: I have always loved domination modes, but Apex really opens up a lot of opportunities with the Legend abilities! Think about your play style specifically for this mode, when selecting your Legend. If you intend to set up and prioritize defending held objectives, use a defensive Legend like Caustic, Wattson or Rampart, for example. If you intend on constantly rushing B or the enemies base objective, use an offensive or mobility Legend like Fuze, Horizon or Octane, for example. There are definitely wild card Legends too, which are great for both defending and attacking. Legends like Bloodhound and Seer can provide your team with defender locations as your team pushes in to capture. Crypto can wreak havoc on defenders, if you EMP the objective as your team pushes in to capture. Think about the game mode when selecting your Legend, and maybe don't just stick with your main/favorite if it doesn't fit the situation. In my opinion, there are really only 2 Legends are are pretty much worthless in Control, which would be Lifeline and Loba (unless maybe you want to loot the care packages a tiny bit faster with Loba? Idk)

Capturing objectives: Think about the defensive setup before you just run in and jump on the actual objective. Legend abilities can provide vital information in this regard, which can help tremendously! Even beyond that though, if your team is getting shredded walking through the front door, flank around and try another entrance with a mate or two. Don't just keep attacking the same route if it isn't working. I like to use grenades right before I walk in to capture. Get familiar with bouncing frags off the door frames into objective rooms/buildings to take out those people sitting in the corner! The more you know about the defenders, the better chance you have of capturing the objective.

Offensive defending: This might sound stupid or confusing, but it works like a charm! If your base is at A, and the enemy team has you pushed back toward A/your base, you don't have to ALL keep attacking your base objective. When me and my buddies find ourselves pinned in Control, we flank around and capture the enemy base spawn. One quirk of Control makes this play even more powerful than in other games. Your enemy can ONLY respawn at their BASE when you control their base spawn. This means that the enemy can no longer spawn B, and push your base, allowing your remaining team mates to get control of the field again, and usually B with it. This single play, has ignited more comebacks for us in domination, than I could possibly count. It works without the respawn quirk on Apex, but works even better with it! You can even use the same play if you know your team is about to lose B. Push the enemy base objective! You would be surprised how many people will peel back from attacking B, to try to prevent you from capturing their base.

Defending objectives: Defensive Legends, obviously, have the upper hand here. One thing to keep in mind as you set up shop though, don't put all your defenses facing the enemy spawn. People WILL flank and use other entrances!! I have never seen an objective with one access route, so be sure to cover all possible attacking routes! Also, you do not have to sit on the actual objective to defend it. You can patrol outside the building, or along the route that the enemy is taking from their spawn to get to said objective. Get creative with your positioning!! Don't sit in the same corner the whole match, and expect to be able to defend well, against good opponents.

This is just some stuff I can think of, off the top of my head. Hopefully someone that is new to a Control/domination type mode can maybe find something in here that helps! I know I have left out tons of potential tips, so I look forward to hearing tips from others on here! I'll try to remember to come back and add any tips that I think of while I am playing. Best of luck out there, Legends!

@dSKyNafinchin Well written well said. Can not stress the importance of Play the OBJECTIVE!!!: more than you already said.

Kudos to you for a great post.

  • @dSKyNafinchin Totally agree.

But if I find a kraber in a care package I'm not gonna lie. I'm going to find a quiet place to try and pick people off. 🤣

@hayhor  @Asmodeus566  I keep forgetting about the care packages! Every time I remember, I tend to get a gold alternator. Saw a Kraber on the ground after a kill once, but got destroyed as I was grabbing it, Lmao!! This is a good point though. Great practice for care package weapons!!
