EA wants to make Apex Legends "more new player friendly" in 2024

https://www.dexerto.com/apex-legends/ea-wants-to-make-apex-legends-more-new-player-friendly-in-2024-2577541/

What has been done so far?
Orientation matches:

- Too few. How can you learn a map & rotations + how guns, attachments, survival items work in TWO MATCHES ( two wins in reality but after watching my son get carried back to back by sweaty octanes/smurf in his orientation matches its really just two or three matches)

- System leaks even pro level lifetime 5.0 kd streamers into these orientation bot lobbies.

Legend unlocks:

- "Apex Legends is a free-to-play hero shooter game" Do as you advertise. People play Apex because of gunplay. Not the legend abilities.

It doesnt matter if newcomer can throw Seer queue for 2 weeks if they get instaboxed without shooting gun by even an average skilled players.

Practice range bots:
- I mean come on man. Not really an option to train for actual BR match. Also as someone pointed out the guns feel different in range than in actual game. High recoil guns like R99, Devo IMO have way smaller recoil in range than in actual BR/Mixtape.

Big issue is on the orientation matches. Once the new player has completed the orientation he cant go back to orientation anymore.
This kind of forced feeding to the wolves is killing the new player enthusiasm.

Fun fact: My average win % is between 5-6%.
My highest win percentage is from the season I started playing Apex (S12). Played 220 matches and have 23 wins. Yet I had KD of under 0.1. So I see what you did there EA.
"Look mom, I won another match!!" when in reality I didnt win anything. I got carried because of rigged matchmaking to get me invested.

Another fun fact: My highest KD is from a S17 where I only played about 20 matches.

Whats common on my S17 & S12 runs. Didnt buy the BP on either one. "Why bait the hook when fish is in the boat". Once you buy it, either you invest more money or you play enough to gain coins for next season BP.

Please add PvE bot option.
Normalize playing on “easy” mode just for fun, not to add to the stress of life.

Interesting what one news outlet takes from the story and what another takes from it.

    https://www.videogameschronicle.com/news/ea-says-apex-legends-will-expand-beyond-the-traditional-battle-royale-universe-this-year/

Same piece, but very different details. I was especially surprised to see the churn numbers which tell a very different story than the one you hear here on the forums.

At any rate, I was a little heart-broken to hear Wilson talk about how the Apex we play today will not be the Apex we play in a few years. IMO, there's already been enough change, and not for the better, in the basic BR format. On the other hand, the piece also seems to suggest entirely new game modes. Not sure where that would be headed seeing as how they already publicly scuttled the big PvE mode they were working on. Or did they scuttle it as a stand-alone title, and are now working on folding elements of that effort into the main game??? Who knows. Speculate away, people.

That is so true! Sadly, it's practically always been like that. The most popular legendaries for this type of game back then were Octane, Wraith and Pathfinder (also the fastest). Get there quickly, wipe everything out with R99, and get away again quickly (to the next victim).
And hardly anyone used the wide range of weapons. In areas that had already been looted, there were only sniper rifles and shotguns and their ammunition lying around.
That's why I found the mode in which only sniper rifles and shotguns were available to all players very interesting for a change.

  • @Airish85 A game that's been in service for 5 years is likely never going to be kind to new players again unless new players are really protected. Changes to game mechanics, gunplay and abilities are not the answer.

    @reconzero

Wouldnt really say its the same story when your link is more of an interview where they "sell" the idea and the one I posted is pretty much just a topic without any real inside input 😉

@hayhor Exactly right. Mechanics & gunplay are what makes Apex as popular as it is. Not so sure about the ablities though.
Would be cool see a mode where they would take out the ultimate abilities from all characters.
Put more focus on the gunplay and I dont think the game would become unbalanced in terms of legend picks..
Sidetracked from the topic but who cares 🙂

    For the newcomers:
If PvE Battle Royale is too much to ask, how about PvE Arena mode? Doesn't help out with the BR map knowledge but would help to learn the gunplay & legend abilities.

Once new players are confident enough to take on fights they could join the BR PvP. Get oblitarated -> back to the PvE Arena for more practice.
That's how I see it done properly.

Forcing anything & taking out options to choose what kind and how I want to play a game is never a good option.
Fortnite is a great example. You have so many options to choose from depending on your mood. You wanna sweat grind ranked, go for it. Feeling a bit tired, so might go throw nades at a zombie horde or build a house from Legos, thats fine too.

What I meant was that they're both taking their information from the same source:

"According to EA’s CEO Andrew Wilson during the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference (as relayed by VGC) on Wednesday, March 6, 2024."

Same investor call by Wilson. I'm sure he said a lot of different stuff, but one news outlet reported on specific things while another focused on others. Funny that.

Until they fix matchmaking and address cheaters in a meaningful way, Apex will only be n00b friendly for a very short period of time.  You'll get a few newbie only lobbies and then get thrown into the meat grinder to be fodder for cheaters/smurfs/3-stacks.  Then you'll be likely to quit and play something else.

No matter what they change or add otherwise, for the casual player Apex will always return to this experience after the shine of new maps/modes/cosmetics wears off.

@Airish85Apex is a "Hero" shooter. Hero implies abilities play a part. I'd argue abilities are very weak compared to other hero shooters I've played. Paladins, OW being 2 that come to mind. The issue I see is some abilities are super easy to use vs others. For example conduits tactical takes no skill. Press a button and you shield heal and a teammate does(through a wall miles away). Horizon throws a thing down you just ride to height. Meanwhile pathy has a grapple that needs to be aimed and getting the most out of it takes skill. Lifelines drone has to have good placement or no one can use it.
