For the whales, freeloaders and developers

As i stated in the original apology thread for iron crown, it looks like plan B was part of A, sell legendary items through event boxes first and then sell items direct in the second half to maximise income.

Amongst all the complaints, Respawn developer on reddit ''but in reality the Iron Crown event has been a success, both with revenue and player engagement. Our numbers are up across the board.'' makes me wonder where this is heading both with the current frustration amongst the community, financial success for the business model, the lack of acknowledgement to downright insults from the devs.. Also the future of gaming as stated in the video when the goal posts move again..

@DoYaSeeMeThey do push cosmetics, excluding solos the entire crown event was about skins and misleading it's player base to maximise profit.

Most if not all fps games I have played recently whether 1st or 3rd person have had a large focus on cosmetics and most players while having one main will be playing 3 legends due to character selection.

Edit: Concerning the exclusiveevent pass.. Is that not what battlepass is?

@Silz616I agree with RagTagg that as you don't see yours often in this game the value is reduced and he makes some good points and great content, hopefully he'll do another regarding this subject in the near future.

@Pretzelnutcake I know the shiny cosmetics can give a confidence boost, but it's a minor thing for a BR shooter. The level of complaint is so high that it makes one think this game a dressup. It's funny, since you don't even get to see what you wear during the match, except for like 10%, while your enemies care only about the holes they make in whatever helmet you are wearing. To get back to the car analogy, once you are inside your Ferrari and make that engine roar, you will probably get over the fact that it's grey and not the traditional red and enjoy the ride. We should do that in Apex as well, stop caring so much about that huge pot thing on top of bloodhound's head and get on with the bullet sharing.

  • Ah, and another thing. I feel that the original skins are the best, because they are part of the concept, they tell the stories of those legends as envisioned by their creators, instead of being made to look shiny to get the cash flowing. The skins with tribal, medieval  or ghetto flavour are nice, but it's hard to make them fit to this universe. Those arrows that some of Caustic's skins seem like a mistake, there's no bow in Apex (wooooh, I'd love one, with poisoned arrows).

This sums it up nicely imo. (contains swearing) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCelXREqVqU Please watch it all, as it's not a rant and he makes very good points.

I'm not a complainer as a rule, but I draw a line when pushed over the edge, and that's what Respawn have done imo.

Only watching his videos since the launch of Apex, but enjoying his style. Did propose him in a post around here somewhere to become a narrator for upcoming seasons or a voice for a new legend.

  • @DoYaSeeMe while you are right that you dont have to buy. The econonic models are made to be more and more predatory. And the ones that get the short stick are the ones that have difficulty controlling their spending due to things like gambling problems. Also how exclusive does these cosmetics have to be? I would buy stuff if they were like a dollar, hell i would probably spend more than a recular titel in the end. But freck my balls its like 260 dollars for ONE event if in not misstaken. I know the publishers want ALL THE MONEY, but hell.

Hmm, I actually find the model used by Apex way less predatory than in many other games. The skins are optional, they don't boost the power of a legend or the XP, some don't even seem to belong to the Titanfall universe or add interesting details to the history or personality of the legends. The game doesn't push the expensive cosmetics in my view that often, so I don't feel pushed to buy stuff to get rid of the annoyance. In a match, I have the same chance wearing the default skin as a player who owns every legendary item and bought each battlepass.

Apex is 99.9% about reflexes, skills, tactics, in a game like this is unusual to focus many resources on cosmetics, while such high level of noise regarding them is a little bit unusual / unexpected.

That's why there's only a limited number of high level skins and not a very big range in prices. Also, if they'd have nice looking skins for 5-10$, those 20$ ones wouldn't sell, because they need to bring more than shinier details to justify spending those extra 10$ I've started a topic with ideas to put more value in these cosmetics here: https://answers.ea.com/t5/Creators-Corner/Ideas-to-improve-the-weight-of-the-cosmetics-in-the-game/td-p/8135907/jump-to/first-unread-message

What is wrong though is the gambling aspect. In a freemium game, it's nice to get surprised by receiving a legendary item, next to the currencies and other resources that drop from that box which you usually also need to advance in that game. In Apex, most players care about the best skin for what they main, the rest is pretty useless and paying a large amount for useless stuff is absolutely bad. Buying the skin that you want, even with a higher than average cost, would've been much more appropriate in this case. Or an exclusiveevent pass, why not.
