"because RP not being on the line when that much proficiency is needed feels pretty bad"
Wait. What? Did you not realize that you were in the pubs queue? Did you not know that game play is its own reward in pubs, easy or hard? Should ranked give out points based on how much you had to sweat, regardless of kills, damage, or placement?

For me and many, ranked feels more rewarding because you’re actively working towards unlocking a rank level, so yes ranked does give out points (or rewards) which relates to how much you sweat. Diamond players in Diamond lobbies are sweating more than Gold Players playing in Gold lobbies, and the rewards (unlocking a higher rank) is thus greater than unlocking a lower rank.
I just think the game plays way differently at higher MMR (make one mistake and you get erased). I honestly don’t want my public games to feel as stressful as my ranked Diamond/Masters ranked games. I do think there should be a “casual” or “quick play” mode that offers an experience different than tournament-level play.
I’ve been both: the under average player playing in loose MMR lobbies (Season 1-3), and I’ve been the above average player playing in tighter MMR lobbies. The former was far less stressful than the latter, AND I had better success (win ratios), lol.
I’m ok with tighter matchmaking in pubs and everyone playing their doppelgänger and everyone breaking even with regards to outcomes (wins), but there needs to be a reward for the people demonstrating higher proficiency and playing in stressful “top bucket” lobbies— and yes, I’m talking about rewards greater than the experience of the gameplay itself.

To me this reads as: "I'm really good at the game and I think that, as a reward for being good at the game, the game should let me go slaughter noobs for fun whenever I feel like the rank grind THAT I CHOSE is causing me too much stress."
If that's not what you meant then I apologize in advance for misreading or misunderstanding.- 3 years ago

More like:
“I’m really good at the game but I don’t feel like it because the game has locked me into the top bucket, where I lose consistently to top 3% of players in the world.
So I would rather everyone play everyone in pubs (except new players, who need their own space to learn), so that everyone’s outcomes are representative of their skill vs the entire player population.”
I do NOT want to exclusively play noobs. I want to play the whole player base (in public matches). By virtue of this, under-average players would have under average results, average players would have average results, and above average players would have above average results.
It feels REALLY crappy to improve with the intention of having better results, only to lose more overall because the algorithm is locking me into an exclusive experience against the best players. I think this is exactly how a ranked system should work but not all modes in a game.
And I know I mentioned this earlier, but I really mean it, it feels worse (overall) being my current skill level than when I was under-average. Plus the fact that I have to wait longer for games and end up in high ping-lobbies doesn’t improve the experience. Definitely not looking for sympathy; just highlighting the effect of matchmaking.- reconzero3 years agoSeasoned Ace@Axs5626Sxa5001
Explanation appreciated, and I definitely have a better understanding of where you're coming from.
However.
"By virtue of this, under-average players would have under average results, average players would have average results, and above average players would have above average results."
You might get a result like this with looser sbmm, but certainly not if you eliminate it altogether. Not sure if that's what we're talking about here or not.
But I think what you would very likely get is something almost identical to what we have now: high ranking players, especially solo queue high ranking players, would be getting teamed with the low-to-middling players and expected to carry, babysit, what have you. That might make a match less sweaty, but I'm wondering whether or not you would consider it fun. I know I don't. I don't like trying to herd kittens any more than I like it when I get two master/predator teammates who eat 4k badges for breakfast. I despise both situations equally and these are the matches that will typically give me the worst outcomes because players in this game make zero accommodation for teammates of different speeds and skill levels. I try to dumb things down for my noobs and they get angry and impatient, and my diamond/masters definitely don't even bother to try for my benefit. "Be quiet and try to keep up," is not really any way to talk to someone you will soon be relying on for a res.
I'm just not sure if there really is any way to get to the outcome you want.
