Introducing the EA Anti-cheat (EAAC)

Source: https://www.ea.com/security/amp/news/eaac-deep-dive

EA Anti-cheat or EAAC uses kernel-level access just like what they’re doing with Valorant. According to EA’s press release, this will be available on all online PC games starting with FIFA 23. No info if it’s gonna be available for past games like Apex.

Why is kernel level anti-cheat needed?

This varies on a game-by-game basis. For games that are highly competitive and contain many online modes like FIFA 23, kernel-mode protection is absolutely vital. When cheat programs operate in kernel space, they can make their cheat functionally invisible to anti-cheat solutions that live in user-mode. Unfortunately, the last few years have seen a large increase in cheats and cheat techniques operating in kernel-mode, so the only reliable way to detect and block these is to have our anti-cheat operate there as well.

With FIFA 23, we’ll see new and exciting cross-play features. In addition to EAAC protecting our PC players from cheaters, our console players who match with PC opponents will also be protected from cheaters operating on PC platforms. “

Apex Legends/Respawn introduced a new anti-cheat software 2 months ago ( https://answers.ea.com/t5/General-Discussion/Respawn-secretly-investing-more-in-anti-cheat-software/m-p/11664605#M214187 ) as well with Hyperion. Valorant’s kernel-level anti-cheat while better than most anti-cheat softwares, can still have cheats. To clarify, EAAC is just for PC.

Do you think this a good step to stop at least the basic level cheaters? Some are arguing kernel level access is too invasive.

  • Kernel level access is pretty much becoming a standard now.

There's not much that can be done against cheaters nowadays, this is IMO the best step to take.

Good to see them taking some major steps against cheaters.

  • wonder when they'll tackle the issue of strike packs and chronus.  Just had a guy in ranked melt me from a distance with a volt SMG, while I was beaming him with an R-301.  We started firing at the same time but somehow he gets 16 bullets on me and I only get 4.  Clearly using rapid fire off a strike pack and possibly other stuff.

  • @swift07 There may be a hit reg problem as well depending on your ping. This whole week has been terrible for hit reg, or at least I've noticed it far more. Point blank shotgun blasts with 0 hits, R-301 making impact noises but only 1 hit vs the enemy's 12, etc. I have about 90 ping, so I know that may play a factor, but it's pretty frustrating.
  • just got melted by another cheater (level 76) in ranked.  Watched them the rest of the game and they are definitely using aim hack.  I reported them but don't expect anything to happen.

im glad they are trying something. im assuming kernel level has a port similar to usb. it tries to create a mechanism to slot in to test for anti cheat mechanism layered on top of the port.

this slot is tested for in developer mode by cheat providers who add the mechanism as something they layer on top of so the mechanism is redundant. thats why the kernel mode is needed but the hackers say they have the best ring which allows them to layer on top of and control the mechanisms needed to implement hacking.

its interesting to say the least. i c russia missiles flying into themselves probably because of 1 port strategy and this is redundant now since the 1 port or kernel level is exploited.

so much fun with this combat or layered and redundant layering to stop hacking and is then seen in actual war. as everybody believes in the one port strategy.

NAME REMOVED  is the biggest * that i know, i know him a long time many jears from grid 2019. very big cheater and unfair pilot, in beginning i had him in list but fast i kick him out. he is like NAMES REMOVED. all cheaters with cheat engine and clibs dll in grid 2019. and in legends with extra acculate, more power between gears. they overtake your car in 1 second, no fun
cheat 8,99 euro in month or jear abo
maicoll2 will give me cheat i say * off and kick him out
we will have only fun in game and not unfair gaming. win or lost... * off. fair game and respect is better

I personally don't like the concept of kernel level anti-cheats. That's mainly because they run regardless if you just booted up the PC and haven't started the game that uses the anti-cheat just yet.

That's because it makes me worry about things such as privacy and about the possibility of the anti-cheat messing with system applications like Nvidia or AMD Radeon. (I use AMD Radeon and I remember seeing games that I have installed using Nvidia technology.) I'd be very annoyed and upset if an anti-cheat bricks my PC or forces me to reinstall Windows.
