Is Cross Play actually a good idea for Apex Legends? (Discussion Thread)

Since the launch of Apex Legends on February 4 2019, the ability to play with friends and people on different platforms has been the most requested feature from the community, and at EA PLay Live 2020, Game Director for Respawn Entertainment Chad Grenier finally announced that crossplay is on the way. This announcement has also revealed lots of bad things this could bring to the game. Let's talk about it.

Good things about cross play

- Firstly and obviously, you will have the ability to play with anybody no matter the platform they use

- Much faster matchmaking time

- Competition in Ranked Leagues is going to get a lot tougher with people and skill levels you've probably never faced before: you now have higher chances of getting into Master, or even Apex Predator!

Bad things about cross play

- Many console players fear the "advantage" PC will have over console, due to exploiting and KB+Mouse v Controller

- Likewise, some PC players fear for some advantages controller has over KB + Mouse

Can we do anything to prevent these bad things from happening?

Yes! Apex could:
- Add the ability to turn cross platform matchmaking off. I personally disagree with this but it would make it better for everybody*

- Take dealing with cheaters and rule violators a LOT more seriously. Hire more moderators, add a detailed and good report system on all platforms that satisfies everybody etc. because there is no reporting on PS4 and the Xbox and PC systems are pretty bad

*There is no information about the ability to opt out of cross play yet, but it is highly likely

    Honestly speaking,I feel the way in which it's implemented will be the deciding factor as getting this wrong could be catastrophic for apex.

    As you've already stated the pro's and con's we can just skip past those, but it's safe to say that forced crossplay will result in a lot of exasperation from the playerbase and will likely have seriously damaging implications for the game as a whole if it isn't handled in a sensible manner.

    At least, the player base will be very huge.

    And also I suppose there will be an option for non-cross play.

    @CompleatBeetThere would not be an issue if there weren't cheaters on both platforms. There are way more on PC ruining the experience for everyone. I'm guessing it's the same few, remaking accounts still keeping away new players.. so barring these players from playing or giving them a real alternative instead of banning their accounts over and over would help bring new players. I know some of them probably don't want to, but it seems that's where the bar has been set for a win; with no dignity or ability.

    If they're an fps player and know what to look for, they'll either know it's simply full of cheaters and quit before getting started. Taking care of that so Apex feels competitive again would be a start.

    The M+K / controller difference should be okay, like personal preference. Controller players are going to be a little more accurate, they can use a little higher sens to turn faster.. and m+k can use lower to be more accurate. This doesn't compare to the cheating problem.

    @CompleatBeet To me it shouldn’t even be on the list of things to work on. In general I think it’s a bad idea, but aside from that there are at least 10 things that should be done first:

    Servers
    Leavers
    New Maps
    Overpriced Store
    Alter character focus away from Wraith and Path
    Buff weapons most are sponge bullet guns
    2 Team mega battle
    Solo mode
    No rewards for ditching games
    Have console play matter just as much as PC

    Then if someone wants to talk about cross play sure, but not a second before every single other thing on that list is handled.

    I just hope there's the option to enable crossplay individually for PS4 with Xbox and console with PC.

    Let's not kid ourselves, the amount of aim assist Apex has on console is not that big to make it a fair fight between controller and mouse & keyboard.

    If you take a player with mouse & keyboard and another one of identical skill with a controller, the one using m&k will stomp the other one every time.

    Yeah I'd like to see a triple setting system personally.

    OFF.

    Console.

    All.

    Probs gonna just be on or off if they do it to be fair though.
