well didnt say for all characters... There are some that could be used in this case. Also I see many people talking about lore, well lore is imaginary so they can write it with not much trouble. There is no reason mirage could not have a sister performer or wrath her crackheaded brother... even gibi could have mma sister that wreak bones :D

Warframe tried this, and after one character they said, "f'ck this time consuming sh't, new frames only", or something along those lines. Lore aside "cause respawn does care about it, and will not rip it apart for a surprise sibling" I doubt hit boxes will survive, let alone the process of hiring a new voice actor just for alt version of an already established character.
You also bring up this idea adding diversity but it's not real diversity, just lazy pandering. Close example "it's using race instead of gender, but the reaction would be similar" was when warner bros decided to make a movie with a black superman, did fans hate the idea ? No, superman has been around for decades with few multiversal doppelgangers or clone characters, so surely they did a bit of research to - then the stupidity came, instead bringing any of them to spotlight, they decided to just make Clarke Kent black -_- . Out of all the possibilities, they use Kal-el simply because people recognize him. Do you think people accepted with anticipation let alone black comic book readers ? No, but you could google it to see for yourself.
If respawn decided to announce a male french character, only to reveal later on that it's a Wattson skin, the reaction wouldn't be pretty.
