NEWS: Rank BR Rework Confirmed for Season 13?

Teq, an apex pro, tweeted and showed different rank distributions across different games where it showed a typical Gaussian/bell-shaped curve except for Apex because there's no rank demotion.

This has gain some traction and one of the devs, Josh Medina, has replied by saying that "We better get a hashtag come season 13 that says #ThanksRespawnForSavingApexRanked." Does this mean we'll get rank demotion next season? But on my recent thread showing the dev responsible for rank BR said that there would be no rank demotion. Did they change their mind or there would be a ranked RP rework but still be a rank demotion protection?

As of now, Rank has been the easiest it has ever been. This is a problem for Masters/Preds though since the minimum RP to reach Pred (top 750) has been too high and at this point mostly a metric of grinding and not really skill anymore. If never had a dive trail before or want a diamond badge, this would be the easiest and best time to do it before any massive changes. There are more diamonds and masters now than ever since rank was added in Apex in season 2. BTW here's the current rank distribution of BR and Arenas rank from Apex Status since Respawn has stopped posting official ranked distribution already. Notice that since Arenas has no demotion protection, you would see majority of the distribution is in the median showing a bell-shaped distribution compared to the weird way BR ranked is set up. Will this change anything? Do you think the RP system needs a rework?

  • @Cheese9ManYay another pro whiner comparing a BR to non BR games. Maybe he can explain how skittlecakes is cheating again. 🤣 Cannot wait to see how demotion doesn't fix this. People will simply stop playing ranked once they hit their level. The apex graph looks just like a chart of marathon runners times. A runner has a time target. They hit that target and stop.

It isn't like the people stuck in the 4th level of each are going to spread out evenly through the middle. They would have to make it much harder to rank up to do that. Theyd have to give less or zero points for kills and only points for top 5s. And they can't do that because they want more players at upper levels to help queue times. Can you imagine the backlash as most people can't get top 5 and lose or don't gain points over and over?

  • @hayhor @Cheese9Man it's true the graph of ranked br dosnt show a bell shape due to the demotion protection. But that dosnt really matter. What it does show is players mostly stop or are hard stuck at level IV each rank. Removing demotion protection will not change the numbers of players in each rank, as @hayhor said they will play untill their goal is achieved and then stop. That is not a successful business decision, to have players stop playing, so I think the dev is just playing to the crowd.

The bell shape is just analysis and not a reason to change a system. Perhaps other games with the bell shape should change their ranked model and include demotion protection. They may get more players playing ranked over a season and the game mightbe more successful.

It could be interperated as an even worse situation by the nay sayers if the unranked players were left out of the figures as below

(tu @Cheese9Man for the site name in your post) 😉

But to my eye, using the below graph, it still looks like only about 20% are d and above. That means 80% of players are below D. Masters about 3.5% and preds maby 0.5%. Can't see any reason to change the system to benifit 4% of ranked players.
