Permissive license and new bug bounty request
- Create a new bug bounty program for Apex Legends.
- Release a 6 month old version of the game client and server under the Apache 2.0 license. Do not release cosmetic art assets or the most recent builds.
Why?
- Apex Legends is one of the best games of all time and the code base should be treated as such. One of the best ways to increase the security of the game is to incentivize security and open standards.
How could this ever work?
- Using the metaphor of Linux, releasing open source versions of the game will allow a multi-decade software dynasty that will have positive feedback loops back into Respawn.
Other considerations:
- Do not release any anti-cheat code references.
- Cosmetics and official support will still only be provided by the official online version.
- This will create competition outside of Respawn to incentivize keeping the game fresh with private servers, mechanics, and private cosmetics.
- Strip trademarked characters but leave abilities in the open source release.
- Respawn may monetize private open source servers with custom hosting solutions and enterprise support (SaaS + hosting revenue)
I hope Respawn sees this and considers this revenue boost idea.
