@soccerking122 It depends really. I definitely take more notice when someone picks a "lower tier" legend such as Rampart but like Hayhor said if you've got decent stats it goes from a ffs they're Rampart to hmm fair enough xD
As for people hating on you for using an L-Star/ Spitfire that's just ridiculous. I had one of my highest kill games playing as Octane using an L-Star and a R301.
On a similar note I get hate for picking Octane but I share loot so it's kinda funny.
If you enjoy playing a certain legend then no-one should care especially if you're decent or actually try. I've had fun playing as Crypto way back when but it is what it is. Can't change everyone's perceptions. I used to enjoy playing as Caustic but......he's basically just running around farting on people these days (like someone took his hammer away and gave him a pool noodle xD).
