Re: Is my internet Connection good for Apex Legends?

@VagetiosYou can play almost any online game when you have an internet over 5Mbs. Games dont need much speed but requires alot of bandwidth.

So lets say you have a cap of 10 GB per day and apex uses 512Kbs. 2 times that is 1024Kb which is 1Mbit per second which is easier to calculate with. 1M(egabit) is not the same as 1MB (Megabyte). In 1 megabyte goes 8 Megabit. So 8 Megabit (in this case 16 seconds) is 1 Megabyte of dataflow. This times 1024 (as there are 1024MB in 1GB) is 1GB. This times 10 again to reach your data hypothetical cap is 10240MB which would be 16 (seconds) x 10240 = 163840 seconds of playtime which equates to 4.5 hours of playtime if I did my maths correctly.

Speed is not the main thing you should look at but ping to a server and stability of your ISP to you and from you to a game server.

@E9ine_AC Wait we have different outcomes. Who did the doozy here? xD

  • @Koochi-Q His upload speed is borderline, so playing Apex exclusively will be OK, but if the connection is shared (as in copper cable lines through the neighbourhood), the congestion might result in problems. Before I got fiber, my connection was heavily reliant on low traffic in the area, and decent weather (parts of the phone lines were suspended).
The up/down speed was 50Mbit/s, but it was very vulnerable...

My current 500Mbit/s fiber line is working flawlessly, even with a wife and four kids streaming a movie each. Still, I get connection issues to EA servers (and EA servers only..!) for some reason (EA)...
  • @EryxApex reason is simple: network buffering. Look at this:

    (source: https://technology.riotgames.com/news/peeking-valorants-netcode , strongly disregard "128 tick" 🙂 )

The client can cause additional delay if it's a low end device and the same applies to a server. The game servers are not equal, we know that some of them are dedicated game servers, but when they are full we get thrown onto public cloud servers, which I assume are not as good as the dedicated ones. All in all, the performance display we have in game is not very relevant, as it only shows network latency.

@DoYaSeeMe Question is, then, why am I always thrown onto cloud servers even at low-traffic hours..? Maybe I should buy BP and a bundle of packs to appease the server gods..?

@DoYaSeeMe Excellent explanation. I will say tho that the in game display is right when it comes to packet loss. Anytime I see a bit of it I get the speed up sensation.
  • @EryxApex Maybe at low traffic hours there are too few players in the area and you get thrown into a queue further away, so you don't wait too long or drop as pred meat. Maybe it has to do with routing as well, also parts of the network can often go through maintenance at night, while issues don't get fixed as fast as during the day... Lots of variables.

@DoYaSeeMe So... you're saying i SHOULD pay a couple hundred $ to gain the favor of the server gods..? Neat! Thanks!
  • @E9ine_AC Wonder where I did the wrong calculation unless it doesn’t do 512Kb every second... hmmm

@BaldWraithSimp I admit defeat graciously but looking at my calculations I don’t know where I went wrong tho...

Before fiber, my connection was still the same as now. It’s heavily influenced by the way your lines are set up. With my 1Gb internet I’ve noticed 1 better thing and even that is so minimal that it’s crazy... My connection went from 9-15ms to 8-13/14 XD. Literally that is the only other change. Then again I went from 600Mb to 1Gb so not much of a change xD.

@DoYaSeeMe programmer, are my calculations flawed? ☹️

Yea game clients use bit resources. Not a ton but enough to matter to some. I wish game clients when minimized pretty much goes to a sleep mode but still allows a connection. I cant say I've seen a game yet that has done this.

  • @E9ine_AC Nahhh, did calculator. I know the system but was too sleepy at first so I thought maybe wrong calculation somewhere...

@BaldWraithSimp, how’d you do so few while I did 2.67GB (further proving my point that I was correct) when playing apex for 1 hour...
  • @Koochi-Q Idk xD
Maybe cuz I been playing on data connection since S7 release as I moved back to a * called 'home'. I miss my router ☹️
