Well I felt like this game would've possibly helped the franchise, though it might be for the best.
They might allocate some of these resources to the main game, or well, fire them...
Either way, might mean that the main game gets some more love, I hope.

Not just them. Ubisoft cancelled some games too.
Gaming is now to the point developers understandably do not want to take risks.
Risks meaning developing innovation of gameplay mechanics or something away from the standard. Some games get like low steam rating and must be hard on them after 3 years of development.
So people go less overhead, minimal effort for greater returns. BR games, just couple of low texture maps. PvP so no AI development required as no PvE element. Throw in some store stuff which won't be pay to win. If it isn't a success then haven't lost much in time. Graphically BR games are low textures, no detail required. Then graphical assets are re-used to create new maps.
BR games churning out. Hope the trend changes in future.

This is still disappointing tho. I was looking forward to a single player game in the Apex universe. - 3 years ago
All tech companies are following this pattern.
Cancel projects for tax benefits, lay off tons of staff, reduce the productivity of all of your teams because of added stress and worry of being let go, use record-breaking profits to buy back your stock, and ensure your executives and shareholders are rolling in money.
Launch another project that requires you to hire additional staff again, thereby increasing your overall costs, but blame the market, gamers and other external factors for poor financial performance.
Copy the indie studio that has created an original idea, using popular IP and the bare minimum of financial resources.
Tell gamers how fortunate they are to have you in their lives while you slowly offer them less and less value for their money.
Promote the idea that your business is in difficult financial straits because of inflation while refusing to pay your developers a decent wage.
Reassure shareholders that you have the next big thing coming, throwing your staff under the bus when poorly designed products don't perform up to expectations.
Highlight another year of strong profits and stock buybacks. Rinse and repeat.
