Second place but champion, bug or feature?

So I jump into Apex for a few rounds of frustration (wasn't disappointed with average lv15 teammates being put with lv90 me). And after a couple matches I got into a lobby ALONE. nobody else got put with me, so I picked Lifeline and decided to yolo it. Landed on the outskirts of Skulltown and ran around for 10 minutes like a headless chicken before I got any good loot, finally with a purple armour and spitfire I set out to get kills or die trying. Made it into the last 4 squads before getting any action, spotted two guys taking pot shots at another two squads so I flanked and took them out. Just me and one other squad remaining, went out looking for them and found two guys, held my own for a minute before eventually dying with 2 kills and 700 damage.

But here's where the funny part happens, I join a game right after that match and pick Wraith and guess who's the champion, all decked out with the legendary skin I just got and all! Had a 6kill game before getting third partied back to the lobby unfortunately. Weird part is this is the second time I got champion even though my team were second place.

Has anyone else experienced this? Any idea if it's a visual bug or if there's a hidden mechanic that rewards bravery, dumb luck and unparalleled handsomeness that I keep triggering?

  • Well there's only 1 squad that wins the game. If 2 previous game winners are put in one game, then another game will have none of the previous winner. A game always has a champion, so if there are no previous winners, it only makes sense that a 2nd place gets champion.

Another factor that may impact this is the kill count. I wonder if 20 kills 2nd place squad would get champion over 2 kills winner squad.

I had 2 cases of being champion after 2nd place game, in both of these cases my squad had 20+ kills in the 2nd place game.

I still think that even if kills do matter, the 1st scenario (no previous winner in the game at all) is the more usual cause of 2nd place champion.

P.S. I've seen a lot of lvl2-5 0 kills champions, so I think that being part of a winner squad has a much bigger impact on becoming champion than kills.

  • Makes sense I suppose, to put a second place player as the champion but unless every champion squad are premade the odds of there not being a champion for each server is extremely low considering how many matches are being played simultaneously, and for me to get that twice in the span of a couple weeks seems even more weird but idk
